Sugar maples, birches, and oaks burst into vibrant colours on either side as you drive into the White Mountains National Forest of northern New Hampshire. One of the state's most spectacular autumn-foliage routes, the Kancamagus Highway, is found here. The "Kanc," as it's known locally, was hewn out of the rugged mountains in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and named after a Pennacook chief.
