Exotic motifs were all the rage when Mann's Chinese Theatre (then owned by impresario Sid Grauman) opened with a bang on Hollywood Boulevard in 1927. The nearby 1922 Egyptian Theatre, with its lavish tile work and hieroglyphics, was the first of Grauman's flamboyant movie palaces to host a red-carpet premiere (Robin Hood, starring Douglas Fairbanks).
