A lone soldier guards the eternal flame inside the Panteón Nacional, in Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial. This former monastery, dating to 1714, is dedicated to Dominican heroes. To visit it, you'll be retracing the footsteps of Ponce de León, Cortez, and other Spanish conquistadors who strode Calle Las Damas, said to be the oldest paved street in the New World.
