The graceful Cathedral Santa María la Menor, dating to the early 1500s, is considered the first cathedral built in the Americas. This Santo Domingo landmark once held the tomb of Christopher Columbus. In 1992, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Columbus's landing here, his reputed remains (Spain also claims to have them) were moved to the colossal Faro a Colón monument.
