Below the sea
For years, the coral reef off Isla Mujeres—about 10 miles offshore—suffered from the carelessness of divers and boaters. El Garrafón National Park was established to preserve and restore this section of the Great Mayan Reef, blocking off vulnerable areas and limiting the number of visitors. Go lightly and you'll see the parrot fish, angelfish, damselfish, barracuda and sergeant majors that inhabit this fragile ecosystem.
