For years, the coral reef off Isla Mujeresabout 10 miles offshoresuffered from the carelessness of divers and boaters. El Garrafón National Park was established to preserve and restore this section of the Great Mayan Reef, blocking off vulnerable areas and limiting the number of visitors. Go lightly and you'll see the parrot fish, angelfish, damselfish, barracuda and sergeant majors that inhabit this fragile ecosystem.
