Stop! in the name of lava
A stop sign and street signs being swept away in a lava flow on the Island of Hawaii, circa 1989.
  Michael T. Sedam/CORBIS
When the fire goddess Pele vents her anger, look out. Since 1983, lava flows from Kilauea's eruptions have destroyed homes, sacred sites, and even an entire town along Hawaii's Puna coast. Take heed if you choose to walk on the lava beds—hot spots may melt your trainers, and sometimes the thin crust gives way.
