Eye-catching designs reflect the island's upbeat style. Barbados is known for its chattel houses, small wooden cottages once built as portable homes for sugar plantation workers. Many of the cottages are protected by the National Trust, and some have been turned into shops. You can visit a chattel house museum and see artisans at work at Tyrol Cot Heritage Village, in St. Michael.
