Wild costumes, goatskin drums, and conch-shell blasts signal the advent of Junkanoo, a year-end carnival with West African roots. The music is known as both goombay and junkanoo; the latter name some say derives from John Canoe, a legendary tribal leader.
You can join the fun almost every night as junkanoo bands fire up at beach parties and bars.
