Week 3

|
The island of Phuket has taken tourism in Thailand to new highs (or lows, depending on what you're looking for!). The commercialism of Patong Beach is almost unreal. It's a town of endless neon lights, go-go bars, pubs and clubs and will appeal to those who want loud, late nights and plenty of action. Between the bars are various stalls selling everything from fake designer T-shirts to barbecue kebabs.
The beach itself is based along the same philosophy of pile 'em high sell 'em cheap. Not a metre of the 2km strip is without attended loungers and parasols (about 100 Baht for as long as you need). You could stay on the beach all day if you don't want to budge as traders offer barbecue meats and other food, clothes and drinks. Happily, the beach traders here are very friendly and not too pushy. If you want good deals on the parasols throughout your stay however, then show loyalty and buy your drinks from your parasol attendant.
The water is a constant hive of activity, packed with jet skis, para-sailers, windsurfers and sailboats. There are cordoned off areas for swimmers and all other water craft are supposed to stay away - it's still wise to watch out for water traffic if you're taking a dip.
And, if you're taking to the water, watch for warnings as the rips often make swimming too dangerous.
If you've got the chance, don't miss a trip over to Khao Ping Kan, the island made famous for its debut in James Bond: The Man with the Golden Gun.
