Week 3

|
Chaweng Beach on the island of Samui is a toned down version of Phuket. It still has a commercial element to it, but is more laid back. The main street is set back a little way from the beach and between this and the shore are endless beach huts, hotels and bungalows. The street offers pubs, bars, restaurants and shops/stalls selling all kinds of fake designer watches and clothes at rock bottom prices if you're prepared to haggle confidently.
Also dotted between the shops are the endless numbers of Thai massage parlours and these are not to be missed. These are very reasonable compared to UK prices -roughly £4 - £5 per hour for full body Thai massage, or you can opt for reflexology etc. Having a full Thai massage feels a bit like being climbed on by a monkey for an hour!
The beach itself is far less busy than Patong. Sun loungers and parasols are provided by hotels here rather than independent traders and are free of charge. Towards the northern end, the beach can be a little tatty, scattered with old bottles and driftwood but as you go further south, it is cleaner and quieter.
As evening comes, many of the hotels put lights and tables on the beach so people can eat by the sea and, although the beach faces east so there is no sunset to watch, this is a great way to finish each day
