Week 5

|
90 Mile Beach is right at the very top of the North Island of New Zealand. It isn't like a beach in the traditional sense - instead of sunbathing and swimming, the main activities here are fishing and driving, very much like 75 Mile Beach on Fraser Island.
The beach is a popular route to get up to Cape Reinga as an alternative to the main road. Before choosing this route up to the cape though, check tide times and make sure your vehicle will cope with the drive up the stream once you arrive. There are usually a few friendly locals who will be able to offer advice.
The beach itself is pretty wide so there's plenty of room for everyone - the drivers, the fishermen and those who just want to play beach cricket or football. Although the sand isn't the most beautiful colour (dark yellow swirled with black) it offers a pretty level playing field.
Just before getting to the cape, there are some huge sand dunes and, if you just happen to have a board tucked away in the back of your car, you can get some serious sand boarding done!
