Week 4

|
Fraser Island is the biggest sand island in the world. The usual way to get there is to hire a 4x4 and take the ferry to the western coast. This is a great way to see the whole area but if you want to do it in style take the scenic route and charter a plane for the afternoon. The view from the skies is stunning and you actually land on the sand, as 75 Mile Beach, not only acts as the main highway for the island but as its runway too!
You can't surf or swim in the sea on Fraser because of dangerous currents and tiger sharks just metres of the coast but there are highlights such as Champagne Pools, Indian Head (you can look down in to the water and see the sharks from here!), The Maheno Wreck and Ely Creek (a beautifully clear freshwater stream).
If you're driving along the beach, take care and drive slowly as the numerous washouts mean a bumpy ride and the occasional roll.
Further inland, the lakes on the island are full of character - enjoy the clear waters and ultra-fine sand at Lake MacKenzie, run down the sand dune into Lake Wabby or swim with the tiny turtles at Lake Allom.
With so much to see and do close by, 75 Mile Beach is a great adventure destination - just watch out for the dingos!
