Throughout the world the quality of beaches is just outstanding. All boast about their own merits to pull us onto their sands and into their waters - cleanest, best views, most secluded, most action-packed, but which can truly be crowned 'The World's Best Beach'?

Few people have been to all of them, so it's only by putting them through one independent unified test that the definitive answer will ever be known.

Here in the first groundbreaking study of its kind, The Expedia Best Beach Report reveals the answer and uncovers the world's ultimate league of beaches.

Finding the World's Best Beach

Expedia Beach Explorer, Pete Shannon, travelled 53,804 miles (the equivalent of more than twice round the equator), hopped on and off 37 planes, crossed 14 time zones and visited 20 beaches, to uncover which sandy shoreline is worthy of the accolade 'World's Best Beach'.

To determine the route, thousands of travellers cast votes in a poll on Expedia.co.uk, narrowing a worldwide list of celebrated beaches down to the final 20 worthy of a visit and onto Pete's action packed itinerary.

His journey began on Brighton Beach in the UK and has since taken him to some of the most famous and far-flung beaches around the globe.

Each beach was put through a rigorous testing process of 20 criteria, creating the most comprehensive evaluation of the world's best beaches ever.

Beach criteria were marked out of five for optimum conditions. For example, as a beach-goer, you want sand to be warm on your feet, but not so scorching you can't walk on it. Therefore, the beaches that scored a maximum 5 were those with 'warm' temperatures.

The total scores, then determined the global league, with the beach with the highest score being named the 'World's Best Beach'.

Something for Every Beach Lover

Knowing that everybody looks for something unique and tailored to their own holiday desires, The Expedia Best Beach Report also recommends beach destinations accordingly to holiday type, enabling travellers to have a perfect beach trip every time they head for sand and sea.

Winners of each 'Perfect Beach' category took into account various criteria that would make the beach perfect for a particular type of holiday-goer:

Perfect for Families: Sandcastle Build-ability, Sand Temperature, Sand Stickiness, Cost of Essential Beach Day Items.
Perfect for Couples: Sand Stickiness, Sand Comfort, Sea Transparency, Cost of Essential Beach Day Items, Noise Levels.
Perfect for Friends Away: Fun Factor, Cost of Essential Beach Day Items, Friendliness of Locals, Noise Levels.
Perfect for Luxury: Sand Colour, Sea Colour and Transparency, Glamour rating.
Perfect for Value: Cost of Essential Beach Day Items.
Perfect for Nightlife: Fun Factor, Glamour Rating, Noise Levels, Friendliness of Locals.
Perfect for Beach Activities: Fun Factor.

So whatever type of beach holiday you're after, whether it's family fun, romantic seclusion, or you just want to soak up the rays on the World's Best Beach look no further.

You're sure to find somewhere that's just perfect for you.
We'd like to say thank you to all those travellers and beach lovers who emailed Pete with advice and comments during his trip.
