Low cost flights

Two thirds (68 per cent) of people say price is the deciding factor when it comes to flight bookings, with just a quarter (26 per cent) citing on-board service, according to research by Expedia .(24)

Simple booking processes (76 per cent) and easy accessibility of the departure airport (72 per cent) are further important factors influencing the decision to fly with a particular carrier. Trust in the carrier over time (63 per cent), as well as positive experiences (61 per cent) also play a key role.(25)

Over time these factors can come to outweigh even price. Passengers who have a good experience with an airline can quickly become “regular fliers”. Switched-on travellers are also discovering that they can sometimes find cheaper deals by booking two single fares rather than a return flight.

Several airlines have already indicated that they are due to launch new routes this year, particularly to Eastern European destinations; such as Riga, Tallinn and Vilinus. However, canny travellers are now realising that traditional low cost carriers are not always the cheapest option, especially when additional costs such as extra luggage charges, charges for check-in at the terminal and in-flight meals are factored in.

The ‘Open Skies Agreement’ in March 2008 will serve to increase access to Heathrow for many airlines and will result in more transatlantic flights. Throughout 2008 airlines will become more consumer-focused by responding to passenger requirements such as more online check-ins and improvements to inflight meals.
