Fly cheap - sleep expensive
Half (50 per cent) of those who book holidays
are considered to be ‘smart travellers’ – those
who mix and match different comfort levels of
accommodation and flight options to get the
optimum value for their holiday spend. For
some this means taking a low cost airline and
saving money on a flight, in order to upgrade to
a luxury hotel, extending the length of their stay
or spend more on additional activities at the
destination.(10)
While for others, particularly if the destination is
long-haul, the priority may be comfort on the
flight so they may choose to spend more
upgrading to business class, while saving
money on a slightly less expensive hotel. By
travelling to destinations such as the Far East
travellers can afford to stay in more luxurious
hotels as they are relatively cheap. For example,
the average cost of a hotel
in Jakarta is £51 per
night compared
to £152 in
New York.(11)
