“Cheapest hotel i could find in zurich. clean but not great.”
stayed here only because i had 10 hours before i needed to get to the airport and wanted to sleep somewhere. xtra hotel was the cheapest i could find in zurich. the hotel was fairly clean, and kept the reservation. it's right in front of a rail stop so not hard to get to. the "hotel" room gave me more of the impression of a college dorm room than a hotel. it was poorly insulated from sound from the street below, and it's a fairly busy neighborhood, ambulences and trains going by, clock tower striking the hour, etc. the hotel advertises wifi internet which it has but you have to pay extra for it. it's also slightly crappy to use with logging you out every once in a while by itself. the hotel advertises washer/dryer, but cost is 10 francs and then you have to figure out how to use them, which took a bit of effort, not the most intuitive to figure out, at least for this american. i got my night's sleep ok, but at 3 or 4 times what a comparable motel in the states it seems pretty expensive for what i got.
“noisy at night”
I was staying on 3rd floor and noise from the dance club downstairs kept me up till 2 am, which ruined my next day. All the rest about the hotel was good/ok. Tram stop is literally outside the hotel and there are some restaurants and shops within 2 min walk, including Migros. I used self-service laundry facility for 10 SFr and that was very helpful and not too expensive. Staff was nice and helpful. However, due to dance club, I would never stay there again.
“Great Value”
Loved staying at this hotel, very close by transportation and very nice restaurant. Also important is free wifi in the lobby, which I used a lot.
“Nice hotel, but they have to sound proof the rooms!!”
The hotel was simple and clean. The location is great and the staff was very friendly. However, the hotel has a bar area which converts into a music venue and/or club during the evenings. I couldn't sleep until 3am and my room was thumping from the sound bass for most of the night.
“Club 1st-- Hotel 2nd”
The hotel overall was average. However, a potential guest must understand that X-tra is a club first and a mediocre hotel second.
“An upscale youth hostel with beats downstairs - Good at 21 less so at 31”
The hotel was described as a mixed use venue with a dedicated hotel. Essentially it was a glorified youth hostel with a bar and concerts in the basement. The room stunk terribly and smoke wafted in under the door from neighbor's rooms and the hallway- burning our eyes. I think this hotel is fantastic at 21 and less so at 31. The smoke was intense! Also Switzerland was in the midst of a winter storm and it wasn't warm enough in the room.
“Great Price and Service”
If you are looking for a budget option to stay in Zurich, this clean place should def. be in your consideration list. I found all the staff members very helpful (front desk and room keeping). Hotel is also located just 5 min by tram, or 15 min by walk to main train station (Haupt Bahnhof)
“Decent hotel attached to restaurant and nightclub”
Xtra is probably a 1km / 25 mins walk from ETH (the university) main campus (you can easily catch the tram as well). I like walking, and I checked the location out on Google first, but others may prefer to be closer to their intended location which is likely to be 1-2km south. I had a hard time getting to sleep some nights due to noise of heating or piping (but I am a light sleeper - they gave me earplugs, no problems). The restaurant has a reasonable menu and I ate there 2 nights. Breakfast is typical basic European hotel breakfast and good coffee, fine by me but US and UK people wanting cooked breakfast won't get it. Overall quite good value for money.
“not impressed”
Zurich is a pleasure city , people are nice ,and the public transportation is very good.
“Good stop-over”
For the price of the room I was impressed by the cleanliness and efficiency of the place. The room was basic but you get what you pay for. Even the simple bouffet Continental breakfast was more than I was expecting. Good location for overnight stay and a short trip by taxi/tram to train station.
