“EXCELLENT LOCATION AND COMFORTABLE HOTEL”

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel on our recent trip to China.We were upgraded to a suite on arrival and the room was amazing.Lovely robes and everything you could want in the room. The location was good and in the evening we walked to a restaurant nearby.The location was also ggod for our guide who was able to collect us from the hotel. The staff were always helpful and the breakfast had a very good selection.

We went in October which was an ideal temperature.

“Average hotel only”

We were really looking forward to our time in Xi'an and in particular seeing the famous Terracotta Warriors. We were not let down but were not overly happy with the hotel. We stayed in the West Wing and found our room to be very dirty and poorly maintained upon arrival. The carpet had not been cleaned, the bathroom was dirty, power points did not work and air conditioner performance was very bad. Did not like the pillows. We paid extra for an upgraded room with a street view, but the windows were so dirty we could not see out very well. Breakfast was not great in either the west or east wing restaurants. However the coffee lounge was outstanding and we had many meals there. Location of the hotel was OK but only if you liked a long walk to the main shopping areas in town. Although it did not affect us, others staying at the hotel reported noise from the Havanna Lounge several floors below them. Concierge offered to post our letters, but not sent for 1 week. Postcards arrived after we arrived back home.

Area recommendations

Muslim area, Terracotta Warriors, City Wall. Great sightseeing with incredible history. Bell Tower & Drum Tower interesting but not really worth paying to go inside.

“excellent service”

We were very pleased with the value-for-price at Sofitel. The two restaurants we tried were excellent (Koi and the buffet place). I would stay there again (although I wouldn't go back to Xi'an).

“An excellent ****+ hotel with good service!”

I was not disappointed; friendly staff, excellent service, great location - I could readily walk to shopping (10 minutes), the city wall (15 munutes), the Bell Tower and Drum Tower (15 munutes). Excellent restaurants in the neighbourhood.

“Good stay in Xi'an”

It is a nice hotel. The service is very good, our room was upgraded to a nice suit when we checked in. We had a late dinner at the Chinese restraunt on site, the food was really good and the so was the service, but the price was a little expensive though. Overall we had a wonderful time there, will go back again.

“Notoverly impressed”

A bit away from all attractions; staff very formal, not overly welcoming to a single tourist, not a member of a tour group. The room had a number of very obvious faults that were not fixed during my 5 day stay. At check-out I was asked 'how was your stay?', so I started to tell the receptionist but she just said 'that's nice. sign here' and that was it. Nobody was interested in hearing about the room problems.

Area recommendations

The 3 downton atrtractions (bell tower, drum tower and great mosque) and the nightly founrtain display; it was great. Of course, the terracotta warriors, but that is why everybody goes there.

If a solo traveller make sure you find a tour company that tours all sites with english speaking groups.

“Exceptional service and comfort”

Service at the hotel was excellent, friendly and efficient. When we arrived, there was a slight error with the reservation, so they had us waiting for a few minutes. They more than made up for any delay by upgrading the room! It was my wife's birthday on our second night and the staff noticed the date on her passport. They had a cake compliments o the hotel, which made for a lovely surprise at the end of the day. Great breakfast (esp. compared to other mid range hotels in China). Service at all the hotel-owned cafes and restaurants is also top notch. Recommend the lamb tajine at the moroccan restaurant in the west wing.

“Okay for Hotel in Xian”

The staff at the hotel was very nice and friendly. The hotel was nice but only okay if you consider that a five star hotel. There was not much nearby so you would have to take the taxi whenever you leave the hotel

“Best Place to Go Back To!!!”

The Xi'an Sofitel was wonderful. We came in tired and bedraggled after an overnight train from Shanghai. The staff was wonderful and our room was so comfortable that we actually took a nap before going to the Terracotta Warriors. The Spa was a great experience but a bit pricey for China standards. We did not eat there but the drinks were reasonably priced and they had some decent wine. I would recommend this hotel if you ever get to Xi'an.

Area recommendations

The placement of the Sofitel inside the old city walls made it easy to get to the old city walls and the bell tower. Great place to be if you want to see the real Xi'an.
