“A great sanctuary after a day touring”
Having spent few weeks travelling in China, and with another few weeks ahead of me, it was nice to stay in a hotel which had western sensitivities. As much as I love immersing myself in the local environment, sometimes you just need somewhere to relax at the end of a day touring. Somewhere that is clean, quiet and without the sounds and smells of a bustling city. The Mecure on Renmin Square offered this. With it's sister hotels onsite; the Soffitel and Mercure Grand, there is plenty of variety for eating. Be sure to check out the buffet lunch at the Soffitel's Azur restaurant. Something for everyone. For those who just want to veg out for a bit, the room service is reasonably priced and there is a good selection from which to choose. The staff are helpful and able to advise on tour options and transport. The concierge was able to arrange a taxi for me for the day so that I could get out to Han Yang Ling Tombs (highly, highly recommended!) as well as recommend group tours for the warriors, pagodas and other local sites. Note: the hotel does offer a car service for airport transfers; however, it's on the pricey end of the scale. A taxi is a portion of the price and the front desk can arrange one for you.
“Perfect Choice”
This location is a short walk to everything. Muslim street, 6 blocks. bell tower 5, buses to soldiers 10 or 12. I enjoyed my stay, great value and comfort.
“The best Mercure in Xian”
I had an incredible time in the Mercure. First of all, the hotel is beautiful and clean, staff is friendly and helpful, and the best is the price. The overall quality is very high with relation to the room cost. Even though the hotel is a 7 blocks from the Bell Tower (the central touristic point in the city), you can save enough money to get a taxi if you don’t want to walk (I recommended to walk through the city because is nice and safe). The hotel is located in the same square than other hotels of the same group, but the Mercure is cheaper and, in my opinion, more quiet. The breakfast is also very good and no so expensive (70 RMB).
“Loved this hotel”
Staying at the Mercure entitled us to use all of the facilities of the more upscale Grand Mercure and Sofitel at Renmin Square even though we spent much less on the room than we would have at those places. And our room was still VERY nice for the price! We loved this hotel and were very sad to check out. The Renmin Square hotels are about one mile from the Bell Tower and a half-mile from the East Gate of the city wall. It was definitely walkable to and from all the sites excepting the Big Goose Pagoda.
“Very satisfied. Would definitely go back.”
Hotel in a good location within walking distance of many of the sites. Hotel staff courteous and helpful. Huge breakfast included in the very reasonable price. Two small complaint s - charged for use of internet in the room on 24 hour basis and not enough light to read in the room at night unless in the bed.
“Great for the Price”
Contrary to the reviews I read here, it was easy to find places within walking distance to eat. There is a huge supermarket and restaurants right outside the hotel. The breakfast buffet was huge and yummy. An excellent place to be at a great price.
“Luxury and affordable”
On Renmin Square with several other French owned luxury hotels. Very nice. This was so much more than we expected. A spa, pool, gym, ping pong among other amenities. Billiards and lots of restaurant inside & outside the hotels. Friendliest people and great service.
“forbidding facade but very comfortable interior”
We booked in the Mercure in Xian to see the Terracotta army. It [the hotel not the army] is situated in Renmin Square which is a gated enclosure pleasantly laid out with gardens and fountains -a welcome retreat from the traffic but within walking distance of the city centre, The exterior of the hotel looks somewhat grim but we found the staff courteous and welcoming, rooms very clean and comfortable -thick fluffy towels and a supremely comfortable bed.-also a vast breakfast buffet..We also had good meals in the restaurants attached in a wing of the more modern Sofitel. [confusion can arise over which hotel you're heading for]. Being there for Chinese New Year was a bonus as the hotel put on its own firework display which was spectacular. Xian is recommended as a historic walled city at the eastern end of the Silk Road. Foolishly ,I pictured somewhere like York or Chester and was taken aback to find walls 9 miles round that looked capable of withstanding Sherman tanks let alone Mongolian hordes, Also the city is heavily industrial and the smog kept the sunshine at bay for much of the time. Also worth seeing are the Muslim Quarter, the Bell and Drum Towers and the Big Goose Pagoda with its square full of fountains. Always have your destination in Chinese characters for the benefit of taxi drivers who have no English. The hotel helpfully provides a map with the main sights in both languages. I have no hesitation in recommending it to western travellers.
“Satisfied with Mercure on Renmin Square”
No issues at all. Hotel was great and breakfast was good though not included in the room price we paid.
“Oasis in Hectic Xian”
The hotel is about a ten minute cab ride from the heart of Xian and a much needed oasis from the bustle of the Muslim quarter and the Bell and Drum tower. The breakfast was outstanding and kept us full until the afternoon and the hotel was great at getting us a taxi to the terracotta soldiers.
