“This is no longer a HYATT! MISLEADING”

SUPER EXTRA EXPENSIVE, NEVER RETURN , NO LONGER A HYATT HOTEL BUT CHARGING MORE THAN THE MOST EXPENSIVE HOTEL IN XIAN

“A weak Hyatt”

I was surprised that Hyatt had its name on this hotel. The room was extemely dated, the bed was terribly uncomfortable, and it was overall a substandard hotel. The four-star rating was clearly a figment of someone's imagination. There's got to be a better hotel in Xi'an.

“Hyatt Regency - okay hotel, closing down in the next few months (May 2011)”

Nice hotel, not in a great location, but not bad either. Hotel was definitely older, according to local sources the hotel will be closing in the next few months as they are opening a park hyatt. I would suggest staying in the bell tower hotel if possible. It is is a much better location. Xi'an has a bus system, but no underground. Taxis are able to be found, but they don't always like to pick up foreigners. Staying in a good location matters in Xi'an. Would suggest somewhere near the bell/drum tower.

Getting there

Be careful (as in all of China) of cabs taking you for a ride. We found an airport driver for 260 RMB ($40 US) for 4 of us in a van. The airport is not close to the city (about an hour by car). There are 2 types of cabs you can get... One is a basic taxi with no air (150 RM ~$23 US) or a bigger car with air (200 RMB ~$30 US). They have fixed fares in Xi'an.

Must see

Terra cotta warriors are a must Bell and Drum tower, Muslim Quarter, City wall and Big Wild Goose Pagoda are good as well. You could see most of Xi'an in 1.5 days.

Nightlife

XI'an doesn't have much of a nightlife and like most of China, people eat early. We consistently closed down dinner locations when we went out (8pm dinner is late there).

“An Oasis”

Attentive service, terrific for a young family. An Oasis in a dusty and dirty city. Terracotta warriors make the trip worth while, and the Hyatt makes it bareable.

“Excellent hotel, modest price.”

Our stay at the Hyatt Xi'an was extremely enjoyable. The rooms were what one expect at a Hyatt -- very well done and comfortable (although the beds were typical for China, meaning very, very firm). Service was exceptional. The buffets in the restaurant were extremely large. Overall, an excellent hotel at a modest price.

Area recommendations

The Terra Cotta warriors are what everyone knows about, but also be sure to visit the Muslim quarter. Most cities in China have almost no cultural mixing, but Xi'an was the eastern end of the Silk Road, so it does. This is most prominent in the Muslim quarter.
