Outside the small village of Tulbagh S.Africa about 6 km along a paved road. The expedia website did not have the address correctly labeled or I would not have chosen this hotel. Required a trip back into town to eat supper and then driving back to the estate in the dark. It looked as if it was located in town. However, it was a pleasant location, certainly off the beaten track with lovely grounds. Cottage very nice, especially if one wanted to stay for several days and prepared to cook.
The 'luxury tent' accommodation is exactly that: the bed large and luxurious with four posts and full mosquito nets (not that we noticed any, and nor is it a malarial area), and a great bathroom with large oval bath and double outdoor shower (quite private), complete with touches like candles and room fragrance.
Of course, being separated from the bush by just canvas walls, you will hear the creatures around you making their natural calls, which is most noticeable nocturnally and the incredible dawn chorus - but if you're up for the 6am game drive that won't be a problem! The game drives themselves were wonderful.
The food is good - although the dinner buffet is let down by the side dishes in awful heated containers, whereas the cooked to order meat (including game such as impala, ostrich and crocodile) is great.
The accommodation was one of the most luxurious I have ever seen and one of the best designed. There was nothing that was missing and every detail was taken care off including having a full bottle of Port wine available without extra charge as well as many other little things. The bathroom was unbelievable with a bathtub in the middle of the bathroom, an indoor and an outdoor shower under the stars. Complete privacy, so that no one can see any neighbors. Amazing peace and quiet, perfect service and a lot of space. Definitely highly recommended.

I wanted to spend the weekend in Mosselbay in a cozy and quiet hotel. The Protea Hotel is that kind of hotel. A beautiful view over the harbour, the rooms are very friendly and generous, the staff phantastic and the food very good.
Very kind owners, we got excellent breakfast from them with great conversation. It was a bit cold inside and it was uncomfortable to reach the location due to road works between Plettenberg Bay and the lodge.
