“A really good solid hotel”

Hotel Monticello - I had spent a full day looking for the right hotel. I found the right one. It is not the most modern hotel but the king suite I had the bedroom / bathroom / lounge / and a writing desk area. There was a tv in the bed area and another in the lounge area. The staff I found to be first rate and they were ready to help with any questions asked of them. They were extremely friendly. The hotel has a business suite with PC / Printer / Photocopier and as a leisure customer I was allowed access. My personal choice was to vacate it if a business customer needed to use it. The Continental breakfast was fine with cereals / Bread to toast / begels / Pastries / fruit / Jams and basic cheese plus Coffee / Tea and juices. The hotel is about 30 metres from M Street and another 10 Metres from the Circulator bus system. $1 into DC itself. As is general with Washington there are the odd Beggars on M street but they are away from the Monticello. They are not agressive. There are a good range of restuarants locally. There is even Starbucks and Subway. Although M street is busy Thomas Jefferson St is relatively quiet. They provide the Washington Post free daily but you have to pay for the Sunday edition which is fine. Although you should book out of the hotel by 12 noon they stored my bags for me until the shuttle bus picked me up at 2pm. The staff were deep cleaning carpets over the weekend I was there. The hotel carries a range of tourist maps you can take.

Area recommendations
I liked Georgetown. There are lots of students from the local university but they don't tend to inflict the usual habits on you. The area is safe and there are always police in evidence as is the same in downtown DC. Don't forget they are very hot on Jaywalking. Wait for the lights to change in your favour. Drivers like to use their horns.
Other
Plan your visit so that you have an idea what / where you want to visit. Most things you will go to see have heavy security. Plan your wardrobe. Men with shorts they will ask you to remove your belts. Wear shorts with built in belt systems

“Great hotel in a great location!”

We were thrilled with our stay at this hotel. Great location with lots of fun things to do in a short walking distance. All the major embassies are close by if you have business there. If you are a National Park lover, this hotel is convenient to the Old Stone House, the Canal, and Rock Creek Park, and close to all the major DC Parks. There is a bus that is cheap and convenient that stops at the end of the block and runs throughout the city.

Getting around
Until approximately May 2011, the canal bridge on Thomas Jefferson St. is under construction, so to get to the hotel, one must approach from M St. instead of K St. This hotel is very close to C&O Canal Visitor's Center, Old Stone House, Georgetown shopping and dining, Embassies. It is a pleasant but lengthy walk to National Mall and monuments. Recommend using Circulator bus; the stop is at corner of Thos. Jefferson and M Sts. It is more convenient to this location than Metro, and only $1 each way. Foggy Bottom is closest Metro station, and it was closed during my visit. I found the Circulator bus to be a much better option, even if Foggy Bottom had been open.

“A real gem - loved it!”

The Hotel Monticello was just great - a real gem. It is situated in Georgetown close to lovely restaurants and shops. The 'Circulator' stop is at the corner - $1 will get you a quick trip into Washington. If you are feeling energetic it is a pleasant walk. The room was lovely - very comfortable, spacious and clean. A continental breakfast is included and the staff were efficient and helpful (especially the very friendly doormen!). We would happily recommend this hotel and will stay there again on our next visit to Washington.

“Charming hotel, great location”

Although the street was under construction, this was a great find in Georgetown. I had a suite with a sitting area and TV,plus a small kichenette setup which I didn't expect. The breakfast option was somewhat limited, but it's better than nothing (coffee, juice, some fruit, danish and cereal) and it was included.
