“Nice Rooms But Forget the Pools”

Stayed here for 2 nights in Nov 2011& got and awesome pre-paid rate thru Expeda. The fully equiped room (kitchen & washer/dryer) possibly a former time share? was nicely decorated, clean and comfortable. But our ground floor room had a partial see through bath window that faced the parking lot. We had to drape a towel over it for privacy. Room was fairly quiet until guests upstairs started taking their showers etc.. then it seemed we could hear everything. We were looking forward to the spa pools, but found the jets were barely working in them and each one we tried had myriads of dead flies in them - yuck! If the pools had been our main reason for staying we would have been sorely dissapointed, but we were in Wanaka for a wedding, so that was our focus. The maids did a nice job cleaning our room & check in/check out was a breeze.

“ski vacation in Wanaka”

we booked the "resort" stay with a vision of spending nice and cozy nights after full day of skiing. sadly, it was not to be. this really is a motel and should be advertised as such. the room had terrible architecture (TV at impossible angle, mirror in the corner and thus unusable, had to use window curtains at all times otherwise people saw into our shower and toilet). we were expecting nice views of the surrounding beautiful mountains, but instead got a parking lot view. the resort pool and hot tubs were nice (although quite busy), but by far not worth the substandard accommodation and the remote location from the town centre.

“Pleasant accomodation”

Basic double room consisted two beds put together, shame. Room a little tight if you have bag each as no room to put them. Had to juggle the coffee table and two chairs as luggage space. Very clean tidy well appointed apart froTracym above. great facailities re pools gym etc.

“If it was a good deal would stay again”

Service was good, they got confused if we had pre paid or not, but this was quickly sorted out. The room we had was tiny even for a couple, but ok if only staying one night.

“Definitely go back - Wanaka is beautiful”

Close to Cardrona Ski Fields and lovely surrounds and not far from town centre. No problem when you have a hire car - takes 5 minutes. The heated pools and spa are great after a day of skiing or great in summer. Since our last visit you are able to have a drink while relaxing. James the barman was looking after everyone so well. The new lap pool was too cold for winter months - shame. Gym was new too. Food at the restaurant was really tasty - generous amounts - the staff were very attentive. Breakfast prices are comparable to cafes in town. Lovely fire places and intimate lounge area as well. The bed was quite hard but the rooms has lovely balconies and we had one that faced the mountains with the sun streaming in. It is now part of the New Zealand "Williams Hotel Group" and under Accor too so there is more accomodation available with villas for larger groups.

Getting there

Fly into Queenstown hire a car from Omega Car Rentals or any of the other rental places. Convenient - they pick you up at the airport and take you to their office usually 5 minutes away. On return they drop you back to the airport.

“Not whst we expected”

From the name, "Grand Mercure Oakridge Resort", and from the photos, we expected a "resort". We got a mountain motel. It was nice enough but certainly not a "resort" by American standards.

“what a view”

The management is excellent. The hotel is a little outdated but very comfortable and in a good location. Wanaka is a remarkable city.

“The friendly and most helpful staff”

We had a lovely stay there with my most memorable thing being how friendly and helpful the staff were. The food was also delicious. We had a wedding function there as well I could not fault it especially the service.

“Beautiful setting for a perfect place”

The hotel was very accomodating allowing us to check in early. They were also very helpful in all other aspects of our stay. Rooms were a little warm - air conditioning would have been great as we had extra warm weather! Walls a little thin - you can hear everything happening right next door like it is in your own room!
