“Pleasant surprise”

I had never visited Villahermosa before, nor anywhere else in Tabasco State. Frankly, I was expecting something rather commercial. But oil seems to have done a lot for the town and it now boasts one or two quite pleasant hotels, of which the Crowne Plaza is one. Not a destination hotel but more than adequate for a comfortable stay.

Area recommendations

We stayed here because we wanted to visit La Venta Zoo-Museum. The zoo part was surprisingly pleasant - I don't usually like urban zoos. But the main attraction was the Olmec sculptures, nicely and spaciously set out in the woodland surrounding the zoo - these had been removed from La Venta archeological site, which had been threatened by oil development. They are well worth stopping off for a day to see. Otherwise the town shows signs of growing prosperity but has little character.

“It was a business hotel, & we weren't on business”

The hotel and restaurant staff were apparently not accustomed to foreigners, and sometimes it was difficult to communicate because our Spanish isn't the best. However, they tried very hard. They just didn't know exactly what to do with leisure travelers. Also, the shower is badly designed and flooded the bathroom floor. The building is very European in design, including the type of shower, but it was poorly executed. They provided a car (for a fee= or called a taxi when we needed to go into town or to Parque Ventana or to the bus station. This was not a neighborhood to hang around in; wasn't at all walkable.

Area recommendations

We don`t know the city well enough to be able to recommend a neighborhood. This one was probably fine - it was sort of a hotel zone - but it was not walkable because there were no sidewalks, and no local attractions.

Must see

We went to see Olmec artifacts, particularly the giant heads. These were located in Parque Ventana, which was very enjoyable. Unfortunately, the Anthropological Museum was closed for renovation, so we didn't get to see everything we wanted to. Zona Luz, the walking/shopping street, is not really geared toward tourists, but was a pleasant place to catch lunch.

“Should be better!”

We did not have lamp bulbs in lamps, we had 2 big towels only ( needed explain every day at length why we need more and why we need them for face, too) , did not have coffee, sugar, etc, cups with nice coffeemaker in the room presented, 1 soap bar and so on, and so on. Nice staff, almost no English, long lines to service personnel. But the worst was noise ,we heard every sound not only from our neighbors, but from people "above" and "under" us. And they were not especially noisy, just construction of hotel walls, floors and ceilings create that. I used earplugs every night. On the first day in restaurant I got half-baked pancake, they just took it away and returned my plate with 2 pancakes instead of 3! And no info about interesting places or tours!

Area recommendations

Any area would be good, interesting unusual city.
