“not really 4 star”

Some annoying little details. Cracked wash basin. No shelves for clothes. Very low beds. (Not easy to get out of if you have a bad back.) Also low razor socket in bathroom. Both the bath and basin plugs did not work properly. Agreed with reception that we would leave our room entry card in the power slot in the room so that the air conditioning would run on 'low' all day. Card removed from slot by cleaners. But good value for money, given its position, if booked through Expedia. Did not take breakfast in the hotel. 15 euros pp did not sound good value. Would stay again only because of price and it is nearby to where our daughter lives.

Area recommendations
If you want to visit the city stay near the center, Stefansplatz. We have stayed at the Royal Hotel several times but you need to book a superior room there otherwise you can get a very old fashioned one that needs updating.
Dining
If you stay at the Falkensteiner eat at 'I Terroni' (cash only) or the 'Schreiner', both on Westbahnstasse. Both excellent food and fair value. If in the Museum Quarter good food, good service and reasonable prices at 'Die Halle'.

“Clean, nice, friendly, but a bit a distance from the subway”

This is an excellent hotel with very friendly staff, clean, quiet - and rooms are ready before 3PM! The only downside is the distance to the next subway. There are buses close by, however.

“Nice, clean, comfortable”

This hotel is clean and comfortable, and in all, really good value for money.

Dining
There are a number of nice restaurants near by. A Thai restaurant called Bhun Bui along Burgasse was nice (albeit a little smoky) and a Japanese restaurant further along Burgasse called Asahi was excellent.

“Recommendable Vienna hotel - at the favorable Expedia rate.”

It's modern and the neighborhood is safe, although getting to public transport can involve a good walk. On arrival we found several defective electric appliances - lamps, fridge, etc. that should have been checked out by the chambermaid beforehand. Reception responded adequately. The choice of nearby restaurants is very limited. The major reason for booking this hotel was the preferential rate secured by Expedia - which we appreciated because Vienna is an expensive town.

Area recommendations
A hotel significantly closer to downtown would probably be much costlier. A better bet, particularly if you arrive my rail, would be a hotel near one of the two major rail terminals - the Westbahnhof or the Sudbahnhof.

“Fabulous Hotel”

This hotel was amazing. We only paid a tiny amount of money for standard rooms and on arrival we were informed that all standard rooms were fully booked so we were upgraded at no extra cost. The hotel staff were really friendly and helpful. They couldn't do enough for us. Would recommend it to everyone and would definitely go there again.

“Not recommended”

This hotel is by no means 4 star. The accommodation is very basic, room service has 3 entrees and 3 mains. The restaurant is just as bad. Internet is incredibly expensive.

“Falkensteiner Vienna”

I was very impressed with this hotel. It is relatively close to the centre of the city, the staff are very helpful, and the room's are very comfortable. I did not take breakfast at the hotel, as 19 euros was a little but more than I wanted to pay, however, I'm sure it is worth every penny :) The hotel has a bar which is open daily until midnight and this can be a good place to pick up travel/sightseeing tips. Overall this a pleasant pleace from which to explore Vienna- recommended!

Traveller's tip
When you walk to bottom of Schottenfeldgasse, turn right and take tram. I discovered this is much quicker to get to attractions than walking to the metro stop.

“Wonderful 3-night stay”

Good location, with friendly and helpful staff. The rooms were quiet and clean, with a spacious and modern bathroom.

Traveller's tip
The breakfast buffet is excellent, but found it to be a little expensive. Fortunately, there is a great little coffee shop just around the corner from the hotel.

“Excellent Hotel, can't wait to go back.”

We stayed at the Falkensteiner Hotel am Schottenfeld on 15.07.09 for 5 days. There are 6 girls varying in ages from 23-52 years. We go away each year to a different city. This year we were lucky to visit Vienna. It is the most beautiful city. Going back to the hotel, it is quite a walk from the Library and the Rathaus, I would say a good half hour, quite a straight road. We did not bother with any of the underground, the weather was gorgeous and the buildings beautiful. The walk was mostly ok for us most days but a few nights when we stayed in St Stephens area we had taxis. They were very cheap and very posh. The hotel breakfast was expensive which we girls on a budget could not afford. At the time of booking we chose air conditioning over breakfast because of our budget. This was a good idea because the temperature in July was about 30 degs ! There were a few cafes around that did breakfast eggs, omlettes etc. You just came across them as you wandered down the streets. The rooms are perfect, very clean, wooden floors, bathrooms perfect. All with safes. Our 3 rooms were all the same. In the ten years we have been travelling together, never have the rooms been all the same standard - excellent. Normally one couple ends up with the best room ! Reception staff very friendly and hepled us book our day trip to Bratislava on the catamarran from the river. However, we did not miss anything else.
