The oldest and smallest city in Vermont, Vergennes spans just two square miles and was founded in 1788. Downtown Vergennes is a cozy three-block strip of local shops and restaurants situated around the city hall, which was built in 1897 and was once the Vergennes Opera House. A local park features a seasonal farmers market. The town is also located just east of the scenic Vergennes Falls and Otter Creek.
