“"Las Vaccationes"”

My first room was sad. It was probably quieter but gloomy with a no view except for a rooftop and garage parking. They moved me to a room with a balcony after people left from the New Year's celebrations. I was warned that I would not be able to sleep. The restaurantsand bars are located right below my balcony where Musicians, vendors, customers partied and worked till the wee hours of the morning. The plaza had ceremonial events to include marching bands, folklorico dancers, raising of the flag, TV broacasts, dancing etc. The front desk had young people on off hours and would were more interested in surfing the web. Hall lights, hot water and cable and were to me turned off for cost cutting purposes. The location is great to walk to the Cathedral, the Malecon, and museums. It was the time when kids were out of school, so there were many tourists. Forget having a quiet meal in nearby restaurants due to the vendors approaching you constantsly and the musicians trying to solicit their services. No one was rude, no matter how many times you said no. They cater to families so if you are alone, you will have to be very assertive to get service. The buses are like 70 pesos and there many routes. I hired a guide for a couple of trips and even though the guide was very knowledgeable and friend, I was charged too much since I was not a group. I should have taken a cab and paid the driver to show me around. Live and learn. Definitely fell in love with people and food. Viva Mexico! Tita

Area recommendations
The Zocolo, which is the center of the city and a courtyard for restaurants, music, city events, vendors. The Malecon, the boardwalk by the gulf where you sign up for tours, more vendors, entertainment, visit ship museums, board trolley sightseeing rides, restaurants, shops, artists, concerts, naval offices, water divers, fishing, etc. . The Cathedral, The oldest church of the marineros, Boca Del Rio which is the beach strip and the Aquarium which I took a bus for 70 pesos and there more restaurants, make sure you ask for a menu and see prices for before you order or they will charge you a lot more than what is listed. San Juan de Luah, Where the first Spaniards landed and many battles took place. You can board a bus at the Malecon where they will drop you off San Juan for 50 pesos and then they will pick you up in about an hour and half. There are also boat tours of the gulf. .
When to go
Kids were out of school for the holidays. So there was a lot of activities going on at this time. Of course New Year's celebrations were going on and I had a hard time finding a place to be since the families had reserved most of the tables. There were no fireworks that I could see due to a ban. I kept hearing the time to go to Veracruz is during Carnival which is the beginning of March.
What to pack
It was hot! Dec 30th to Jan 10th! Shorts, tank tops and sandals but careful entering churches especially the ladies. I bought a wrap and used it as a skirt when entering sacred places. I was also told not to cross my legs in the Cathedral. I did have a hootie which came in use some evenings when the wind would blow in from the gulf.

“No Frills”

Hotel was adequate for what we needed. -it was clean and centrally located. The hallways were dark and the flooring was bad, but the rooms were about what I expected. The staff was friendly and helpful and the old elevator in the lobby was really cool. We arrived a 3 AM and the music outside of hotel was VERY loud; however, we were given a room at the back of the hotel so the noise was not a problem. Would stay there again.

“Convenient downtown location”

The Hotel Imperial is located on the zocalo, or main square, or Veracruz. This means that it is in the center of activity, which has both its benefits and drawbacks. You are close to all the downtown restaurants, bars, and sites of interest, but at the same time in the center of all the exurberance and noise of the city center. My wife and I were there during Carnival and enjoyed the experience, but had to contend with the music and crowds in the area. The Hotel itself is an older building showing signs of wear. Our room was on two levels and we had to climb a spiral staircase to room the bedroom and bathroom. We were satisfied with our stay. Hotel staff was helpful.

When to go
The celebration of Carnival in Veracruz is a great time to go, but you have to plan in advance. It is the third largest such celebration in the world after Rio and New Orleans. There were about one million people there according to press accounts. You can attend the parades by buying a seat once you are there. The timing of Carnival depends on the religious calendar, so check to be sure you have the right dates. There was plenty of security in the streets and we felt safe there. Veracruz City is a bit run down, but the Jarochos (inhabitants of Veracruz) are very hospitable and their city has a very rich history. It would be helpful, but not necessary, if the visitor knew at least basic Spanish to get around.

“A True Colonial Classic”

Impressive colonial classic hotel, especially the Swiss cage elevator, spectacular. Stayed in a front balcony room with spiral staircase leading to upstairs bedroom/bath where we enjoyed the plaza music and action into the wee hours. Being lulled to sleep by that heavenly marimba music was a real treat. Standing in the lobby to appreciate the artisan work in the hotel is a marvel and that this hotel has withstood many a violent storm and still remains relatively unscathed. Although we didn't experience hot, humid weather on this trip, we did notice that the central air conditioning was a bit weak, there were fans provided but that wouldn't help much when Veracruz was being it's hot, sultry self.

Traveller's tip
Parroquia or Portales for excellent food, service and that famous coffee experience. The plaza for evening entertainment, music, crafts and people watching. The Malecon for evening walks or morning exercise is the best. There are many souvenirs shops but don't miss the Veracruz state artisan galleria right behind Burger King near the malecon, excellent native arts and crafts. The Aquarium is a must see, revealing the dynamics and sea life of the Gulf of Mexico.
