“Very happy with our experience, would recommend to others.”

Upon arrival we were fully prepared for an argument with front desk just in case they put us in an annexe room - as per previous, negative, customer reviews. However we were put into the main hotel and told that continental breakfast was included - our Expedia booking said that no breakfast was included. It would seem continental breakfast is complimentary to all guests, so don't book a better rate room purely for inclusive breakfast! The room was well appointed, but a little tatty with scuff marks on the walls and tarnished bathroom fittings. It clearly used to be a very nice room, but has deteriorated somewhat - still very clean. Room size was a little smaller than expected - but I suspect above average for Venice City centre. We had no view from room (as expected) - I suspect there are very few rooms with a view at this hotel so only the highest rate payers can expect one. Location is unbeatable whether you are after shopping, sight-seeing, or a short walk from Alilaguna Water Bus stop (airport transfer). Concierge was very helpful. All-in-all very pleased and would go back.

Area recommendations
All of them - just get lost and don't be afraid to go into the little backstreet restaurants and shops in the middle of nowhere. Don't worry if you think you are completely lost - keep going and don't turn back, you will soon turn a corner and find a gem of a place. If you turn back when you get lost, you will always be surrounded by tourists - and toursist prices. Murano was a little dissapointing and a wasted trip from main city as all the glass works were shut, so there were just glass shops.
Dining
For the best food, get really lost away from tourist areas and go to small local restaurants where the locals eat. Or ask the Gondoliers where they eat lunch! Don't waste money on buying bottles of wine - always go for a Carrafe of the house wine - so cheap and usually very good. It is a myth that this city is rediculously expensive - if you do the leg work, and don't be shy you will eat and drink for very little here. If you find it expensive, you are still in the toursist areas!

“Lovely Venice”

We both had a really lovely time. The hotel was clean and comfortable with a lovely view from the terrace. The best thing of all was the location, so close to the centre of Venice.

“Wonderful Hotel In an Idealic Location”

The hotel itself is absolutely fabulous. Large clean rooms with a very spacious bathroom (one of the best on this trip). The hotel is clean and very well kept. The location can't be beat and the view of the Grand Canal from the restaurant's terrace is simply breathtaking. The maids were very pleasant and helpful. There were only two draw backs. The check-in desk staff is not at all friendly and they act as if they are being bothered when ask for any type of assistance. In addition, I found that the cost of the Internet is simply ridiculous when you are paying such high prices for the room. Other than those two negative things, I loved my stay at the Monaco & Grand Canal. I would recommend it and I would love to stay there again.

“Breathtaking view but boring continental breakfast”

The hotel is in a fantastic location. The complimentary continental breakfast is so boring! Maybe they made it so boring and bland so you'll have to spend more to have a decent breakfast. However, the view is breathtaking! So if you want a good location hotel with great views, the Monaco and Grand Canal hotel is the one.

“Very nice hotel- Great location”

The hotel was in a great location. I used the vaporetto from the airport and the San Marco stop was approx 75m from the hotel ( do not get the voucher for oltrex water taxi- I was not able to redeem it). I was traveling solo so the room was very small, nicely appointed and looked into a courtyard (as a result was very quiet) so no view of the grand canal, but the bathroom was huge. Staff were fine and helpful. The location was the best thing about the hotel and the included continental breakfast on the terrace overlooking the grand canal was a treat. I would recommend it if you have limited time and want to be right in the middle of things. I would go back but would want a larger room to do so.

Area recommendations
I was only in Venice for a couple of days so I had a list of the main things I wanted to see and so the area around the hotel had the major attractions I was interested in. I toured the Doges Palace (great), The Academia (disappointing) - also extremely hot and no air conditioning and the Peggy Guggenheim Museum (small but excellent modern art collection). The rest of the time I walked the back streets and found interesting places to eat and local shops to browse especially for locally produced paper (marbled) and cards.
When to go
It was very hot when I was there in July- the locals I talked to recommended October and November as the best months to be there. Most of the locals try to get away in August.

“Great location - very expensive”

Perfect location on Grand Canal, next door to Harry's Bar and near St Mark's. Very impressive contemporary public areas. Rooms quite small but comfortable. Wonderful terrace on the Grand Canal, great for breakfast and dinner though you pay for it!

Traveller's tip
Early and late are best times to visit attractions around St Mark Square

San Marco, Venice, Italy: San Marco (St Mark’s) is quintessential visitors’ Venice. The Piazza San Marco, famous for its pigeons, campanile, basilica, Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace) and expensive cafes, is unmissable. The waterfront views are legendary and more gondolas depart from here than anywhere else in the city. In season the Piazza teems with day trippers though just a block or two away streets are quiet and offer more museums and palaces to explore.
