“Moreish ai Mori”

Beautiful hotel with friendly and extremely helpful staff. Atmospheric and pretty with its Christmas decorations it was our first stay at that hotel, though not our first trip to Venice. They offer a tasty and plentiful continental breakfast in a charming room. The hotel appeared to be fully booked for our four day stay. Guests are mainly couples of all ages though there were a few family groups with children. Bar is small and cosy, nice place to have a drink before going out for dinner. On arrival at the airport we boarded actv bus and at Venice bus station caught the vaparetto from P. le Roma to S Marcuola (about three stops). From there it is a little over a five minute walk to the hotel which is close to the historic Venician Ghetto and a good range of shops and cafes. There's a lovely bakery just over the bridge that sells gorgeous bread and pastries baked in the traditional oven there. It's only a few minutes by vaporetto to the Rialto bridge, a few stops more to Piazzo S. Marco. On a negative note, beware of booking the cheapest standard room, they are next door to the main reception entrance, plus our comfy room only had a skylight, so no view (pitch black and very quiet at night though, best nights' sleep for years) and the heating setting was stuck at much too warm, there was also a lingering odour from the bathroom drains. That said, I'd have no hesitation in staying there again, but next time I'd pay extra for a better room.

Area recommendations
A trip around the Doge's palace is worth visiting, not just for rooms upon rooms of artwork and ornate decor but for the walk across the bridge of sighs, so called because the prisoners sighed when they caught their last view of the outside on their way to incarceration in the small dungeons. Not for the claustrophobic. A visit to Florian's Tea Rooms, S. Marco's plazza, expensive but worth it if only for the atmosphere and over the top antiquity. Recommend the Trattoria Alla Madonna restaurant off the main canal at Rialto and the numerous crowded stands to buy fresh slices of pizza or foccata. Rialto Markets are worth a trip too.
What to pack
Light wheeled luggage, there are no roads/taxis so you have to lug everything around with you. It's too crowded to easily use large back-packs or umbrellas, and take comfortable flat shoes (so many steps and bridges). Buy a good, small road map before you go and get your bearings, it saves hours of aimless wandering via the unhelpful and misleading street/place names with arrows that take you on circular routes. Also, a printed copy of the Vaporetto map that show stops is helpful to take.

“Quality hotel in residential neighborhood”

This hotel is in a residential area of Venice, which means it was quieter than most. It is convenient to vaporetto stations, but the chose of restaurants was limited without walking. In hotel food service is limited. The breakfast bar was average.

Shopping
Hotel staff arranged an enjoyable trip to a Murano glass works.
Dining
Limited food service at the bar in the hotel. The breakfast bar was average.

“Classic Venice Elegance”

If you're looking for a hotel with impeccable service, attentive and helpful staff, where the barman wears a tux (and has a fine single-malt Scotch selection), and everything looks like you stepped into a movie of Venice in 1930 (except they have WiFi in the lobby), then this is the hotel for you. The front desk / reception is classic, wood-paneled with mosaic tile floor, with dashing and well-spoken clerks (excellent English, good adice) backed by a wall of mail slots for each room where they hang your key (on a big tasseled fob) each time you leave the premises. The hotel style is elegant and warm and vaguely oriental, as you also see hints of elsewhere in Venice (which, as a powerful merchant republic, had trading relationships all over the world). The included breakfast is good and plentiful (fruit, various breads and croissants, a breakfast tart, hard-boiled eggs, juices, cereals, sliced meats and cheeses, yogurt, bottled water, and a fabulous expresso/capuccino/cafe latte/hot chocolate machine), with inside seating plus outside in a spacious, pretty courtyard. There are three separate small buildings, the main one in front with multiple floors, another one on the side (also multiple floors) and another in back (with plans to expand to another building). Our room 303 was in the back first floor, smallish but tall ceilings, a huge window, quiet, nice bathroom, cable TV; although dimly lit, anemic A/C. Phone calls are expensive as is internet after a free 1/2 hour.

Area recommendations
Cannaregio, on the north side of the Venetian island, slightly off the main tourist route so quieter and much less crowded than elsewhere in Venice. But still only a brief walk from the train station and all the major sites, with at least two water bus (vaporetto) lines -- 51/52 and 41/42 -- at three major stops, including Madonna dell Orto the last stop of he Alilaguna orange (arancia) line directly to the airport. Cannaregio is local and Italians tourists (and a few savvy foreigners) go to hang out and be seen, drink wine and have an inexpensive meal at one of the many good bars and eno-osterias, like All'Antica Mola, Al Timon, Paradiso Perduta, Osteria L'Orto dei Mori, La Cantina (GREAT raw fish, and wine selections), L'Anice Stellato... There is also a little hole-in-the-wall on the Fondamenta degli Ormesini that sells beers from "Tutto il Mundo" (around the world) - very unusual for Venice.
Getting around
Walk, walk, walk - this is a city you have to get around by foot so don't be a slacker! Take the vaporetto, the lines are easy to figure out and the view is great, the air is fresh and they move fast. Buy a 12-hour ticket (have to get from a ticket booth or tabachi shop, can't buy them from the machines) and ride all day. Don't forget to swipe your ticket before you board to validate them! But if you don't have a ticket you can still board and buy one from one of the staff members for the same price, but only a 1-hour ticket (not the 12-hour one).

“Second Time Around”

We first stayed at the Ai Mori D'Oriente in Sept. 09. We found it convenient to a Grand Canal Vaporetto stop, as well as a Lido, Murano or Burano Vaporetto line. The hotel gives each guest a sense of luxury which is reinforced by attention to detail. The staff was very accommodating and communication in English was not a problem. The bed was very, very comfortable, and the room was a very good size. The bath was wonderful. The entire property is well maintained. One knock: No internet connection in the rooms. One must use a computer space located near the hotel lobby.

Area recommendations
The Canareggio sestieri is recommended. We found Venice to be very, very crowded in July, as compared to September. All of the sights to be seen were very well attended. The vaporetti were filled to capacity at all times of day. Therefore, being in the Canareggio was a "less dense" experience. You can walk the city from this hotel to Piazza San Marco, if you like. On one hand, we found it to be less crowded than most other parts of the city, yet, on the other, you could be out and about until 1 or 2 am, and people are sitting in squares and soaking up the atmosphere.

“Nice Venice Hotel near Ghetto”

Nice location in a quiet area... good service and very clean.

“Not bad, not great”

Breakfast was same stuff each day. Staff were fine. Had to teach them to make a Martini/Gibson. Cocktail onions are 'cipolinas' and they said they would start stocking them. Bar is nice. Location is off the beaten path; which was a plus. Explore and enjoy!

Area recommendations
Head for LIDO Island and VISIT Venice from there. Get a pass for the Vaporetto!!!

“Need better soundproofing between rooms”

The hotel staff were friendly, helpful and service oriented and the rooms were very neat and clean. The location suited our needs however it was a 30 minute walk to Piazza San Marco. With regard to our feedback, we would have liked more variety at breakfast and would have enjoyed a better night sleep had we not heard the noises coming from our neighbours television set.

“Nice quiet hotel in Venice”

This hotel was a lovely hotel in a quiet area in Venice. It was easy to access via the 41/42 or 51/52 or Airport ferries. It was approx 2 blocks from the main avenue in Venice and is near some nice restaurants and bars. The rooms are fairly small but comfortable and the staff were very helpful. Breakfast was included as was free 30mins of Internet. If you can get around on the Ferry system in Venice then this place is great as it is a little off the beaten track. Our advice is not to go to the restaurant just down from the hotel as the food is terrible and a rip off. Instead stick to the restaurants closer to the main strip in town.

Getting there
If flying into Venice this hotel is great as its right near the 1st stop from the Airport Ferry. If travelling in via road or train take the 41/42 or 51/52 as its quite a fair way to walk from the station.

“An oriental delight”

This hotel, as its name suggests, is 'oriental' in character and decor - celebrating Venezia's postion as an historical meeting point between traders from the east and the west. It is situated in a quiet area of Cannaregio - providing a haven of peace away from the often unbearable 'busyness' of the main drag from the station via Rialto to San Marco. Its situation is just one canal away from the Fondamenta della Ormesini/Misericordia, on which are situated a number of bars and restaurants, including the 'authentic' - and moderately priced - Antica Mola. Although apparently remote, the hotel can be reached by vaporetto and an eight minute walk either from San Marcuola on the Canale Grande or, from the north, the stop at Madonna del 'Orto (itself a church that should be visited). The hotel provides an excellent breakfast and has a bar area where patrons can - albeit at a price - refresh themselves after a day visiting the sights.

Area recommendations
Canareggio (see above) Ghetto (Historically, the first in Europe - and near the hotel) Turning off the main drag, it is amazing how quiet the calles (streets) can be - even at the height of carnevale. Walk from the Accademia to the Salute (and take the vaporetto across to San Marco or San Zaccaria). Walk down the Rio Terra Garibaldi (a former canal) & beyond to Venice's original cathedral of San Pietro. Have a pizza by the Ponte dei Greci. Buy a reduced price vaporetto 3 day tcket @ 'Venice connected'. Combine walking, vaporetti and traghetti (50 cent gondolas!). Use the 3 day vaporetto ticket to visit Burano and Torcello (where Venice began and where there is a still magnificent Byzantine cathedral. Visit the cemetery island of San Michele (vaporetto stop: Cimitero). Find a 'baccaro' and have an 'ombra' (small glass of wine) and a chicceti (small snack) - Alla Vedova (very near Ca'Doro) is a good starting point (if you look down a side alley!). Take the vaporetto to San Basilio and seek out Miss Garnet's angel. Take the vaporetto to Guidecca (Palanca) and have a prosecco at an osteria looking back across to the Zattere. Whilst on the Zattere, have an ice cream from Nico's gelateria. Ride the vaporetto (head for the seats in the stern) along the Canale Grande early in the morning or by night (magical!). Visit the fish market at Rialto (early in the day). Take the lift in San Georgio to the top of the campanile for a magnificent view of the city.
When to go
Dec/Jan: likely to be very cold/foggy.....not a good time for a first visit. mid/late Feb: best month - seriously!.....but beware of crowds (and prices!) at carnevale). High summer: Avoid - too humid (& mosquitoes). Sept/Oct: good time, but still 'high season' proces. November: Aqua Alta - interesting for a day, but a great nuisance, to say the least!

“Good value with Expedia, enjoyable & comfortable”

We were not in the main building but in the adjacent property. Which given the price we paid via Expedia was what I had anticipated as did not think we would have been offered the premier rooms. The room we were in- 503, was reached along a long, corridor, which sloped down. Inside it was a large room with very high ceilings (15ft) with a high window, which gave little natural light as it faced the fire escape. This made the room very dark. Bedside lights were not really adequate for reading. We had a double and single bed, the single was actually a day bed.Linen was clean and the room was warm with underfloor heating which could be adjusted easily. The room initially smelt damp- but this was Venice! The bathroom was lovely- good shower over full bath and marble trim. Towels rather thin but clean. Very small CRT TV, with limited channels. In room safe, fridge, minibar. No coffee/tea maker Room cleaned daily- No complaints. Breakfast adequate- but the same each day-selection of bread (no toast), cheese, ham, cereals, yoghurts, crispbread, boiled eggs, fruit juices x 3, tea/coffee/hot chocolate via a machine. No hot food- unless you paid extra. Staff friendly & helpful & not overpowering. Excellent location, in quiet residential area full of character, 15 mins walk to St. Mark's, 5-10 mins walk from nearest vaporetto stop.-Del Orto. Lot's of really good places to eat locally. Local off licence that sells draft Prosecco at 2.50 euros a litre!

Area recommendations
Explore Cannaregio- check out the local restaurants, walk around the Ghetto. Visit the fish & fruit markets in Rialto.
Getting around
Walk- its a great way to get a feel for Venice & water buses are exorbitantly expensive. Get the bus back to the airport (Marco Polo) which is 3 euros per person (single) as opposed to the 13 euros per person charged on the waterbus.
Dining
The Hotel is really well served by fantastic restaurants & eateries just a few minutes away. I used the Rough Guide. We enjoyed sampling the 'Bacari' snacks which were a meal in themselves and found the local draft Prosecco excellent!
