“Small is Beautiful...”

The hotel is in the village of Malamocco on the island of Lido and is great if you want to escape from the hub bub and busyness of Venice island. It's ideal if you want a more relaxed and peaceful environment a bit off the beaten track - which really suited us. You can take walks down the island by the sea/water/promenade and enjoy the views across to venice. This is probably not the hotel for you if you want to be in the thick of Venice - it takes about 40 minutes to get into Venice itself from the hotel - walk to bus stop (5 minutes) , bus ride to San Elizabeth port (20 minutes) where you pick up the water bus which takes you into Venice itself (another 15 minutes). The buses and water buses are frequent and run until late. We bought a 5 day ticket for 50 euros each which allows you to travel on road buses and the water buses for free. We found the bus trips and water taxis really enjoyable. The hotel is small with only a few rooms, so consequently the service is excellent - the breakfast is buffet style. They don't serve evening dinner - there is a tratorria in the village which served great food - at reasonable prices. There are lots of restaurants 20 minutes away at San Elizabeth port and also in Venice. The 2 or 3 staff get to know you personally as the hotel is small and they are very knowledgable and helpful about Venice. The other great thing was that this hotel was about how the price of equivalent standard other hotels in the centre of Venice.

Area recommendations
All of Venice is amazing - I would recommend just wandering around all the neighbourhoods and soaking in the atmosphere. We went to the islands of Murano (where the glass is made) and Burano (where the colourful houses are) on the water bus - both islands are beautiful - and much quieter than Venice itself.

“Small palazzo close to lagoon-side walk”

Ca del Borgo and Ca Alberti are sister hotels, both restored small palazzi, in the pedestrianised centre of the old village of Malamocco on Venice Lido. The furnishings are antique and beautiful, the rooms spacious and comfortable and the staff and service impeccable and friendly. For us the location was ideal and contributed a lot to our very enjoyable stay. Visitors on a short city-break wishing to spend every minute in Venice might find Malamocco further away than they want, but it is only 15 mins on the frequent A and B bus services to the Lido boat stops, then a 10 min crossing into Venice. However, if you want to spend some time relaxing by walking or cycling beside the lagoon or on the long sea walls, maybe playing golf or tennis or visiting the beaches at either end of Lido, Malamocco is hard to beat. You can also visit the Thursday morning market at Chioggia (no 11 bus then boat). There are two restaurants close to the hotel, one seen as more trendy than the other but without any menu, only the day's specials recited by the waiter and not accepting card payments, The other is more the village trattoria, takes card payments and has a menu. Both serve good food, one exclusively and the other mainly fish. There are also plenty of places to eat on and around the Gran Via in Lido centre. We already know Venice well and like the relaxed atmosphere on Lido, with the option to cross into the city itself easily when we want to. We love to watch the sunset over the lagoon.

Area recommendations
The whole of Venice has wonderful architecture, churches and museums to visit, but our preference is to stay on Lido, with its relaxed resort atmosphere, bikes for hire, sports facilities including tenbnis and Venice golf club at Alberoni, beaches, and wonderful walks either beside the lagoon or along the sea walls. There are shops, bars and restaurants and the full length of the island to explore, and if you like markets you can reach the very good one in Chioggia (fishing port at the south end of the lagoon) by no 11 bus and boat. For us, Lido offers the ideal combination of relaxation and the option to cross quickly into the city centre for sightseeing, shopping or eating if we want to.
When to go
I'd suggest Spring/early Summer ore Autumn. Mid-Summer (July and August) can be unbearably hot. There could be flooding during the winter months, but if there will be less crowds if you don't mind the cooler weather. If you go in winter it would probably be best to stay in the city, as there would be less options available on Lido, which is my preferred location to stay.
Getting there
You can get to Venice by air, rail or road, but once there you can only travel around by boat or on foot, except on Lido island, where there are roads, buses etc. From the airport you cross into Venice or to the Lido by Alilaguna boat, unless you want to get a bus to Piazzale Roma, the road terminus for the city. If you arrive by train or car you will be already in the city at Piazzale Roma, ready to progress further on foot or by boat. Find the location where you are staying on a map and get directions as to the nearest boat stop. The Hello Venezia website has details of the routes of the various boat services which you can download, as well as information on the different types of ticket available. If you're staying on Lido and travelling by car, you can take it across by ferry from Piazzale Roma. Otherwise on Lido there are frequent bus services if you're staying away from the Gran Via area close to the boat station.
Getting around
Once you're in Venice, it's walk or take a boat. You need a good map to find your way around, and will have to walk at least part of the way to most places, unless you want to pay quite a lot for water-taxis. The public boat services go up and down the Grand Canal, across to the Giudecca and around the perimeter of the city, as well as across to Lido, Murano and other lagoon islands such as Burano and Torcello. Don't make the mistake of thinking this is just a city with some canals, like Amsterdam or St Petersburg, it is all canals and footpaths. The only place where you'll find roads and buses is Lido. Details of the boat services can be found on the Hello Venezia website.
What to pack
Comfortable shoes are a priority, with tee-shirts and trousers for day and something slightly smarter for evening. Don't bring beach-wear unless you're going to Lido, Be prepared for cold and/or wet weather in winter.
Outdoors or beach
Apart from exploring the lagoon islands by boat, there are a variety of sporting options available on Lido, such as tennis and golf, bikes for hire, lengthy walks along the sea walls or alongside the lagoon and, of course, beaches. At the main centre of Lido at the other end of Gran Via from the boat station, you pay to go on the beach but there are facilities such as beach huts, showers, toilets, restaurants and life guards, as well as lots of lovely fine sand. At the opposite end of the island, at Alberoni, there is a "natural" beach, without any of those facilities. You can get there by bus (service B) or by bike if you feel more energetic. It's probably a bit far to walk unless you're already part-way there, at Malamocco for example. Venice golf club is at Alberoni, and if you have a handicap certificate you can play as a visitor (booking a few days ahead recommended).

The first thing to note is that this hotel is a 2 hour transit to the airport. (Bus No. 5-vaporetto No. 1-A or B bus to the Lido), and 30 minutes from Piazza San Marco (A or B bus and ferry). It is difficult to access after midnight. Then we have not stayed in the main building. We've been redirected to an annex of the hotel located near (not shown in comments). Italian television is full (no French or international chain) and the TV set is tiny. The WiFi service is chargeable. Finally the breakfast is very average: no fresh juices and buns frozen croissant with jam. Still, the hotel and the rooms are in Venetian style, in good condition and spacious.

What to pack
Outdoors or beach
