“Superb location”
This hotel is in a superb location - just across the road from the main entrance to the city of Avignon. 500 metres up the road is the SNCF station where, if you are inclined you can travel further afield. We booked a superior room through Expedia and it was brilliant. Two double beds, a comfortable lounge , bathroom with bath and shower. The two patio doors led mout onto a lovely courtyard where we would come back with our lunch and enjoy the sunshine. The pool on the roof top is VERY small but delightful. Avignon has enough to do for a 4 day break and be sure to walk over the bridge (about 30 mins) to explore VIlleneuve. Staff discreet and freindly. We didn't eat at the hotel as Avignon has loads of restaurants to suit all budgets.Without doubt a great hotel and location.
“quite a good hotel in a good location. .”
A modern hotel which is OK but somehow lacks the atmosphere of a 4 star hotel. No tea or coffee making facilities in room and staff not interested in providing any. But Expedia got us a very good deal on price and we would certainly use Expedia again.
“Did the business”
If you are looking to travel around Provence by train the location is ideal - right next to the station. Sometimes station areas can be a bit seedy but not here. Unfortunately, while we were there (March) the trains were either on strike or replaced by buses. One fellow passenger, a local, shrugged his shoulders and said 'Monsieur, this is France!' The room was very spacious and comfortable. The hotel was very quiet - at times we felt we were the only people there. Service was fine. The one small problem we had (non-working room safe) was fixed very quickly. We didn't use the restaurant, and in fact never saw anyone in there. Who wants to eat in a hotel when there are great little French restaurants not far away? The hotel could do more to promote their restaurant - there wasn't even a menu in the lobby. Why not give discount vouchers at quiet times? Overall an excellent stay. No, we didn't try the swimming pool - it is on the roof, and the Mistral was blowing!
“Good location”
We enjoyed our stay at the Avignon Grand Hotel. It was ideally located to the train and bus stations, which made it easy when exploring the region. Even though it was very close to the train station it was still a very quiet hotel, situated just outside the city walls. Our room was huge, with two large double beds and a sitting room with lounge chairs and coffee table. The double glazing and airconditioning made the room lovely and cool. The balcony was an added bonus. Breakfast, which is not included in the price, is very expensive but there are many cafe's close by. We would definately stay at the Avignon Grand again and would happily recommend it.
“A comfortable upgrade”
I am biased, having been given an upgrade from standard room to superior-garden by the hotel. This was because we stayed longer than most 1-or-2 night visitors. The hotel looks spacious and uncluttered (just after Easter, so low-ish season). Our room was large, quiet and well-appointed; very clean and comfortable. The bathroom was a bit quirky - erratic hot water supply at times of high demand; a shallow shower tray and short curtain resulted in a wet floor every day, until the cleaner came, and nowhere but the floor to put the shampoo etc. In the room, the bed was good; plenty of storage space, and a safe. Breakfast, though expensive, was plentiful, and staff topped up supplies as needed. No other meals were available. The pool area is more a sunbathe-cool-off place, and the room key-card is needed to enter. The hotel does accommodate coachloads quite often, but seems to absorb them in its many rooms. There was also a business meeting or two, but again without effect on the guests. Avignon, within the ramparts, is not a big town, so the situation of the hotel still means one can be in the central square after very few minutes walking, and at the Pope's Palace soon after. There are several interesting walks around town, and discoveries to be made. Take comfortable shoes and explore.
