With some of the only cliffs along the southeast Indian coast, Varkala offers a more relaxed alternative to the crowds of Thiruvananthapuram to the south. Above the sandy beaches, the town features a number of historic and religious sites, including Sivagiri Mutt and the 2,000-year-old Janardana Swami Temple, along with boat tours through Varkala Tunnel.
