“A good hotel”

We chose this hotel as we were visiting Utrecht University. It is a good, simple hotel with helpful and friendly staff. The price of our room was reasonable. It was comfortably furnished, if a little dated, and the bathroom was small but more than satisfactory. The standard of cleanliness throughout the hotel is good. Although the hotel is not central, you can walk to the old town in about 15 minutes and public transport is excellent and frequent. We chose not to eat breakfast at the hotel but had an excellent breakfast in a cafe nearby. Overall, we would happily stay here again.

“Kay”

Bad location away from town. Rooms were really poor quality for the price paid. No double beds just singles. Very basic room.

“Quiet location but straight bus to downtown fun!”

The hotel was very comfortable and friendly. While I was there in November, I would like to return in the spring to enjoy the balcony and terraces! The only criticism would be the cost of the minimal breakfast. 15 Euros seemed high but unfortunately the neighborhood doesn't really have nearby cafes.

“Quiet & Friendly”

The Malie is about a 15 minute walk/4 minute cycle ride from the nearest restaurants on Bild Straat. The receptionists all speak English, are helpful, and will offer umbrellas if raining. The few Hotel rental bikes were fully booked all the time, but there was space to store rentals from others. Our minor quibbles: While the bar/coffee were available at all times, there was no kettle in the room. The Hotel breakfast was seemed pricey to us by UK /US standards; we chose to go out and buy on Bild Straat at of 1/3 the hotel price or at the Station KIosks.

Area recommendations
The whole of central Utrecht: Amsterdam in minature (without the red light). Canal side restaurants, historic buildings, parks, easy to walk or cycle. Friendly and helpful people - Even the few who could not speak english were pleasant and helpful as best they could
Other
Bike Rental/riding The OV Fiets rentals at the station are manned by english speaking Students at weekends. They do their best, but can't fix problems. Weekdays the full time staff can fix problems, but don't speak english. Smiles and sign language seem to work. The "Statfiets" or city bike brakes by back pedalling. This is trickier than it sounds, especially on any down hill grade. Don't ride with the saddle as high as normal for touring. Try and brake with the crank arms at 9 and 3 O clock, and jump down from the saddle. Otherwise pay more for a model with brakes.

“No parking and fairly rude staff”

Although the hotel is advertised with parking it does not have any parking facilities! There is parking on the street but when we arrived we had difficulties finding space near the hotel and finally found one about 5 mins walk away. So it would be great if Expedia took out the parking bit. The staff in general were quite rude except one receptionist who was overly nice and gave us incomplete information about public transport which didn't help as we had to drive to the place where we wanted to take the bus to, as the bus was only once an hour! That information would have been helpful, together with the timetable. We stayed for 3 nights and our bathroom didn't get cleaned once! All the cleaners seemed to do was to make the bed. So not impressed. Overall, I would not stay in this hotel again.

“Quiet hotel in Utrecht”

The hotel is nice. Next to downtown on a quiet street. There was no double bed just to single bed for my room rate which is a bit disappointing. The staff was ok although not very useful for finding a good restaurant. By the way if you need a good restaurant got to "MAS", you will not be disappointed. I skipped breakfast as it did not look like anything special and went to a restaurant called Le Journal instead.

“"Ambience, Amiability and accessibilty”

The hotel is attractive, has atmosphere and is in a good area. It is within walking distance of the city centre and buses are also nearby, as are some good restaurants. The staff were friendly and had good English skills. My only query-criticism is that there was no ability to make a cuppa in our room.

“A nice hotel but not central”

This was a very pleasant, small and friendly hotel, with a lovely little garden at the back. The lobby was full of books and a pleasant place to sit with a drink from the bar. Staff were friendly and very helpful. Double room was a little small. One complaint - our booking didn't include breakfast in the cost, and when we checked in, staff indicated where breakfast was served but didn't mention the price (we should have asked but didn't think it would be drastic). Cost was 15euros per person for a basic self service buffet - even tea and coffee was self service, and choice was limited. At end of 4 days, we were given a bill of 180 euros - a real rip off for what there was. Other minor thing was that although hotel was in good residential area, it was a little far from the centre - about 30 mins walk, or a bus 5mins walk away. Buy a strippenkarte for travelling - it costs 2 strips to get into town.

Area recommendations
Central area near the canals is where most restuarants are and most picturesque. Utrecht is lovely, like a smaller and quieter version of Amsterdam.

“A lovely stay”

As always, our experience here was excellent. The Malie is definitely our first choice for a stay in Utrecht. The staff is always pleasant and helpful, and the location is perfect if you like a quiet neighborhood and don't mind the 10-15 minute walk to town.

Area recommendations
The Oude Gracht by the Dom tower with its many cafes, restaurants and shops.
