“Everything was ok until...”

I was satisfied until the taxi they called to take me to the airport arrived. The driver said "They told you the fare was 660 pesos?" They didn't tell me and 660 pesos is not a fair price to take a Montevideo taxi to the airport. It is also not fair for the taxi not to use it's meter. After a short argument with the taxi driver, he decided it would be best to use the meter. The actual taxi fare from the hotel to the airport was 334 pesos. However, the driver showed me the dispatch order which specified the fare to be 660 pesos with a 280 pesos commission for the hotel. Of course taxi fares will change, and the taxi's from the airport use a different (higher) rate schedule, but you should always make sure the taxi uses its meter!

“Great Place, Great Location, Wonderful Staff”

I did not really know what to expect as this was our first time to Montevideo, but I was extremely happy with our choice. The hotel is located about 2 blocks from the water. It is in a very populated area with lots of restaurants and shops within close walking distance. The staff spoke English and were very accomodating to our needs. Our room was very clean. The bathroom was clean and larger than most we'd seen in Uruguay. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were firm and supportive. Breakfast was a lovely spread of fruits, yogurt, fresh juices, coffee, and of course, typical Uruguayian pastries. The underground parking was a fantastic plus as well. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and will return on our next trip to Montevideo.

Bring a 110-volt converter for US products. They have a couple of different types of plugs in Uruguay, all of which are 220-volt.

“Showing it's Age”

We rented a top floor suite and while big enough the room was old and tired. Time to replace the furniture and carpet. The bathroom was big with two sinks and clean. There is serious construction work going on next door and to rear of the hotel so it's noisy right now. I stepped out onto my balcony and looked 15 meters across to a construction crew at my 10th floor level. There's underground parking but room only for 6 cars however there's a public parking garage across the street. Buffet style breakfast is standard. I'm afraid the 4 stars out front belie that fact that this is a tired 3 star. With all the hotels available in Punta Carretas and Pocito I'd recommend another hotel.

Area recommendations

Friends, security guards and travel agents in Montevideo do not recommend staying in the ciudad vieja, the old city, advising so because of the high crime rate at night. We have stayed in Pocitos and Punta Carretas neighborhods and been able to walk the streets at night safely. There are also plenty of good restaurants to be found in these areas as well as a couple of the city's nicer beaches. We have stayed at the Radisson on the Plaza de la Independencia before but didn't venture far from the hotel at night.

“Great Location”

Apart from a boring breakfast - not much variety - the hotel was great . Staff were very courtious , maids were lovely and did not worry if they had to clean up the room late in the day . Safe " barrio " close to everything ( beaches , malls , restaurants , cafes , transport ) I will go back again without a doubt .

“A hotel that will work well for someone in sorta of strange town.”

Horrible coffee due to much chloride in their water. Unclear why they do not use bottled mineral water to prepared their coffee. Plus the breakfast was weak with no eggs and bacon. Otherwise the stay there was fine and with the free parking in the underground garage its probably worth the price.

“A Place to Stay during Summer Months”

I have been to many different hotels in Montevideo, from cheap 2 stars to the most expensive you can book on expedia. The Pocitos Plaza Hotel was a surprise, the price was just right and included a very reliable free wifi, free breakfast and free parking. The rooms may need a little maintainance, one night the AC started to drop water to the desk where I had my laptop on. At 2 blocks from the beach, I'd recommend to stay at this hotel only during the months of summer.

Srping/Summer months. From November to March.

"Punta Carretas Shopping" and the "Feria de Villa Biarritz" Fair.

Dining

Che Montevideo is a must go and it's a couple of blocks from the hotel. For lunch you need to know "Mercado del Puerto" by the seaport.

Family-friendly activities

Carnival at "Teatro de Verano" during February.

Outdoors or beach

Only two blocks from the beach, you can walk there and have a drink on Che Montevideo, a very nice bar/restaurant by the shore.

“Nice experience in Montevideo”

My wife and I totally enjoyed our stay in this hotel. It is located close to Pocitos beach and a few blocks away from one big mall (Punta Carretas shopping center). The neighborhood is nice, but it is a bit noisy during the night. Regardless the noise I recommend this hotel.

“Pocitos Plaza Hotel”

Sometimes it is a hassle not to be downtown. This hotel is located in a middle class neighborhood, near the boardwalk or Rambala. There is a bus that passes directly in front of the hotel that will take you to the old city. The hotel is clean and comfortable. We walked around the neighborhood at midnight without any problems. You will be happy staying here.

Area recommendations

The hotel is in Pocitos, a middle class neighborhood. Walk a little and you will find good restaurants and sidewalk cafes. In my opinion Pocitos and the adjoining neighborhood Puenta Carretas are the places to be.
