“If you want to sleep at night, don't visit this hotel!”

What the other guests note about this hotel is true: clean rooms, courteous staff, great down-town location, older hotel building with character and reasonable rates, BUT you would be well advised to avoid this hotel! The staff did not notify us that there is an incredibly noisy discotec directly across the hotel and its patrons spill out onto the streets and yell, scream and laugh until 5-6 each morning! Remember, in the States, bar/discos close at 2am, but not in Uruguay. They close at 6am and don't get started until midnight. Thus, the street was quiet as we went to bed, but we were soon woken up with the tremendous noise from across the street. When we contacted the staff twice about this problem, they never offered to reduce the price nor to offer us a room at the back of the hotel where the sounds should be less intense. Bottom line: if you want more than a couple hours of sleep a night, avoid this hotel!

Make sure to visit Punta del Este, even if for a one-day trip!

“Run down and dirty.”

In a scary neighborhood. Had my purse snatched in the afternoon, and only a block from the hotel.

“Great building, great location”

The building is a beautiful old structure that has gone through a funky modern renovation. The building was built to last 500 years and the renovation was built to last about 10. That said, we loved it and the area. The bathroom was pretty disfunctional with a leaky shower and wobbley john. The rooftop breakfast area/bar is great and the food is great. All the staff were over the top nice. I am glad I am not the maintence guy but would stay there again. It was a great value as well.

“Great hotel.”

We enjoyed everything about this hotel except maybe the late night partying on the streets. We were on the 3rd floor, and lost no sleep over the partying. Reception was great--really friendly and accomodating, the room looks great with the high ceilings and lots of space. We liked the breakfast, enjoyed drinks in the rooftop bar/restaurant, and it is handy to the old town tourist area. No complaints at all.

Area recommendations
Old town is interesting-the tourist people give out a walking tour map. N of the hotel is an extensive sea wall/walk along the water. Also did a tiur to Punta Del Este. Resort area worth the effort to go there.

“Hotel Plaza Fuerte”

Great, small hotel directly near main Plaza in downtown Montevideo. Nice breakfast included. Quaint old-style self-service elevator. Newly decorated rooms with balconies. Excellent price.

Area recommendations
Wandered around multiple neighborhoods of Montevideo quite easily. Beautiful old buildings all around. Friendly people everywhere. Few people around in the evenings and very late dinner hours (ie. 9-10 pm). Lots of great steak but very little fish despite being on the Rio de la Plata and near the Atlantic Ocean. Beautiful Teatro Solis. Lots of restaurants in all price ranges. Easy to get to Buenos Aires and Colonia de Sacramento and not too expensive via Buquebus, regular buses and several other hydrofoil companies either via main bus terminal or waterfront terminals. Colonia is worth a day trip but not much more since very few museums and stores. In two hours you can see all of Colonia very leisurely. Several hour bus ride from Montevideo with nice farm countryside. Can best be done as a side trip from Buenos Aires to Colonia then to Montevideo or vice versa without needing to stay in Colonia overnight.
