The Fairmont San Francisco

950 Mason Street Atop Nob Hill, San Francisco - Map

"Great hotel, but on top of Nob Hill"
The hotel was excellent and service was good as expected, except that the complimentary coffee products were not filled daily. The hotel is located centrally, but you should be aware it is on top of Nob Hill, which means that a walk to almost anywhere (shops, restaurants, etc) requires the negotiation of steep streets unless you take a cable car or cab, both of which are expensive. If you like to walk as we do, this is a problem. Also, I would not recommend renting a car as parking in the hotel's garage was a ridiculous $65 overnight. Some public parking facilities in the area are a little cheaper. For that matter, parking anywhere in SF is costly. This is why we wanted to be able to walk to various destinations. If you have trouble walking up and down steep hills, be prepared to spend alot on cabs, cable cars or other public transportation.

"The hotel is centrally located and convenient."
The staff are very helpful with tips on travel. The always available tea, coffee service is excellent. We had a relaxed, comfortable stay. The time just flew back. The weather was super and the walks to Macy's and Union Square were charming. China town is just 10-12 minutes walk. The tram and cable car is close enough to benefit use of a 1 or 3 day transit pass.

"Magical weekend with my niece"
My 18 year old niece and I planned a very special shopping weekend at the Westin for he high school graduation gift. We lounged on the Westin's Heavenly Beds, watched movies, ordered room service - which was very timely and high quality. The service was excellent. . This hotel is classy, with excellent customer service, perfect location for shopping, sight seeing, the theater or just for relaxing and enjoying the activities in Union Square. We will definitely come again!!

Chancellor Hotel on Union Square

433 Powell St, San Francisco - Map

"Central hotel by Union Square and the cable car."
The hotel was recommended by a friend who'd stayed there. The rooms are small by US standards though the facilities are very good, including an old fashioned umbrella hanging in the closet! There is no (apparent) air conditioning but the extremely quiet ceiling fan kept the room pleasantly cool and we didn't need to open the window at night (we visited in July). Ear plugs are provided but we didn't need them. The bed was very comfortable and there was a choice of pillows too. We only used the concierge once, to book the airport shuttle bus, but he was very helpful. The Chancellor has a small bar and also a breakfast/lunch room which closes around 2pm. There are plenty of eating choices close by so finding somewhere for dinner was not a problem, though we ate mainly at Pier 1 on the Embarcadero or at Fishermans Wharf. The hotel may not have all the bells and whistles of big, modern hotels but its very central position meant we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again.

Great hotel. Kind of close to Turk and Taylor- if you're from SF you know what that means- but a convenient location nonetheless and quiet.
