"Ryokan in a lovely setting!"
While not much from the outside, this is a charming ryokan in the cute Kyoto suburb of Uji. I was originally upset that we weren't staying right in Kyoto, but this was soooo much better than staying downtown. Uji has a train station, which puts you into Kyoto in 18 minutes. You can walk into Uji and have a great dinner, and a lovely tea ceremony and a walk through an incredible shrine a few steps from Seizansou. And, it's right on the river, so from the bath, you can see cherry trees in bloom. Don't miss the Japanese breakfast - that was probably my favorite part of the whole experience. A bit old, but charming. Bring your own travel pillow if you don't care for the traditional Japanese buckwheat pillows.

"A sweet way to get engaged"
My fiancé and I got engaged at the hotel. Staff were very kind to arrange a complimentary bottle of bubbly to celebrate. Kaiseki dinner in a private room of the hotel's restaurant was a nice experience. Riverside views were beautiful. I would suggest a room with a private bath - it's worth every penny. The owner of the family-run hotel dropped us off at the station, which was a comfortable 15min walk away.

A city located to the south of Kyoto, Uji is famous for the cultivation of green tea. Tsuen Tea, the oldest tea shop in Japan, dates from 1160. Several scenes from the classical Japanese novel Tale of Genji take place in this city, and literature lovers can visit the Tale of Genji Museum. Beautiful parks and a botanical garden line the Uji riverside.
