Our apartment was on the 8th floor and had a terrace with fantastic views of Trieste and the harbour. The location is perfect, close to the station and old centre of Trieste. The facilities were excellent.

Tiny bathroom - couldn't sit on toilet as the sink was so close to it.
Had to produce credit card statement to prove I had prepaid upon departure - staff were adamant that they didn't take pre-payments.
Also we're given double room when we specifically booked a twin. Desk staff changed it for us but it was an annoyance.
Television didn't work.
Night staff very courteous, offering free bottles of chilled water.
Breakfast and breakfast staff are impeccable.
30 minute hilly walk from the city centre, but in a nice location.

I originally booked this hotel because we planned to arrive from Croatia by bus, and it is just a block from the bus station. It turned out to be a reasonably-priced, good place to stay for a tour of Trieste. We were especially impressed with the helpfulness of the staff. The room that was first assigned to us on arrival smelled of smoke, and we asked if we could be moved. The desk clerk understood, and moved us to an even larger room that did not suffer from smoke pollution, as is so common in Europe. Other staff members recommended some good restaurants and arranged our early morning trip to the airport. All in all, a good experience.
No luxuries whatsoever. Cave-like as it was built in 1800. Towels and linens changed after three nights and beds not made. Sir conditioning not working so she brought in an electric fan, but I would do it again. If you're into history, don't mind roughing it a bit, and are on a budget- go for it !!!

We stayed at the Hotel Abbazia for two nights in September 2014 and were quite satisfied. The room was very comfortable, as was the bed. The bathroom was medium sized (long and narrow) and clean. Breakfast was good, with a generous array of choices. The coffee was outstanding--made to order from a high quality espresso machine. The staff are special here--all very nice, helpful and welcoming. English and German is spoken.
