We loved our two days at Hotel Santa Maria (a portion of our honeymoon). A very beautiful and safe setting with many great local bars and restaurants within walking distance to most Rome attractions. The only reason I gave just 4 stars for room comfort was because of a low ceiling in the upstairs bedroom area that led to my husband and me bumping our heads on a couple occasions.
If you're looking for a authentic feel hotel this is exactly what you are looking for. The only problem being that it is not central to Rome,s main attractions and could mean that you will be spending money on taxis back and forth to the hotel. However if you enjoy long walks and don't mind the distance from central Rome this is the hotel for you. It's deco is beautiful and service wonderful and breakfast can be eaten in the out door court yard square.
great hotel, H10 do the simple things well, the pool on the roof is a major bonus when hot in the summer. Would stay again between June-August. Cannot be described as being in Trastevere, we paid 10-12 euro for taxis to and from Trastevere most days.
Upon arrival the front desk staff (wish I knew the woman's name-but she only works in the morning) was going to allow another guest to check in before me, so that irritated me. The guest had to point out that i was standing the.
The room was spacious, had a balcony, and large tub/shower. I had no idea that you had to use European outlets to charge your phone (FYI first time Americans). The other front desk staff was very helpful and told me where I could purchase one. They also do not have irons (another surprise). You also have to check your key every time you leave the hotel. This didn't bother me but took some getting used to. The breakfast was pretty good with a really decent selection (pastries, cheese, Turkey deli meat, eggs, bacon, and cappuccino ). The hotel is pretty close to the bus or tram. Overall, it was a good hotel with a couple of glitches.
Everything is close except the Vatican which is pretty much far from everything. Really quaint streets in Trastavere (behind the building) and some great restaurants too! We loved the area and it was really fun walking along the river :) cant say anything bad about the place! Don't let the big door scare you or the unimpressive entryway on the first floor when you arrive! Just head straight up to the third floor and look for the "welcome" matt! the rooms are very clean and worked out great! Wife has celiac and we used a great app called find me gluten free. the food was excellent and there are a lot of choices if you are gluten intolerant.
I liked having my own apartment with a kitchen so I could cook breakfast and have late night snacks in the refrigerator. I chose this place because I liked the photos and the fact that it was close to the location of a conference I went to Rome to attend. I believed it was in Trastevere based on the claims by Expedia. But, in fact, it's beyond the limits of Trastevere, though it was quite close to the conference. I learned how to get places via public transportation from the reception staff but, it wasn't easy. And the restaurants that were within walking distances weren't great. But, it was close to the conference.
The entrance to my apartment was on the ground floor. The living room/kitchen were below ground so a bit dark but better than not having a kitchen. The place was kept clean. There were some problems such as lock on the front door didn't work properly and the shower knob was hard to use to regulate water temperature. I heard people in adjacent apartments talking late at night and, it took awhile before I realized that they weren't entering my apartment
Reception staff did their best to be helpful, especially Mario. I allowed them to arrange in advance for airport transfer from airport to hotel. But the driver was incredibly rude so decided to arrange myself for a regular taxi to return to the airport at the end. This was a lot better.
This place was originally a farm house which gave it some interesting features that I liked.
A family run hotel leaves you with a really warm feeling. Well organised and helpful. happy to spend time talking you through the best bars and restaurants. Room was clean but do not expect luxury. Safe was a no no, a little metal box laying in the wardrobe which i picked up and placed on the bed without struggling. Breakfast typical for the area but again plentiful. You could not place this hotel in a better location for the nightlife. Would definately stay here again if in the area.
Modern, clean and comfortable. Very convenient stay whilst attending a conference at the University of Archeology just across the river. Beware evening noise from bar below that goes on until 1am even at weekdays.

Across the River Tiber, Trastevere is a well-established 'boho chic' quarter, full of local character. The patchwork of tiny, cobbled streets houses many bars, good restaurants and buzzing nightlife spots. There is also a treasure trove of medieval churches. In its own piazza, the beautiful Santa Maria in Trastevere has shimmering golden mosaics and was probably Rome's first Christian basilica, founded in 222 AD.
