“Just what we were looking for”
The hotel was easy to find, the room was comfortable spacious with a very nice bathroom. The night receptionist/porter did not speak any English which made it difficult to communicate and ask for a dinner restaurant recommendation however the hotel owner was friendly and English speaking. Our room was on the first floor and the 'balcony' had only a view of the street and not the mountain as we had hoped. The breakfast was very simple, croissants, little pastries, yogurt and fresh fruit.
“The Hotel San Domenico in Erice”
After having visited a number of magnificent sites in Western Sicily, my husband and I were happy to finally arrive in Erice, a small town that still retains its medieval flavor and which is perched at the very top of a mountain. I came there to do research into the Pheonician colonization of this part of Sicily and Erice is one of the epicenters. The Hotel San Domenico is located near the center of town. The welcome we received was warm and comforting, AND practical. The streets there are EXTREMELY narrow, barely accomodating modern vehicles. I kid you not. But with the help of the Hotel proprietress and her small son, we were able to unload the car and park it securely. This enabled us to enjoy our two day stay without worry. Over the course of our stay, it seemed as if her whole family gave us the attention that makes travel far from home, feel just like home. My research attracted the attention of the Hotel proprietors' father. At breakfast, he brought out a wonderful book about the Pheonician presence in Erice and we spent a memorable hour looking at the book while he explained the details. This was a highlight of our trip to Sicily. We no longer felt like strangers there. The hotel itself is very comfortable, clean and the breakfasts were delicious. The Hotel San Domenico was in large part responsible for us feeling really comfortable during our visit. When we go back to Sicily, we will make a point of going back to Erice and the Hotel San Domenico,
