Downtown Home Inn was awesome. It's more BnB than Hotel, but the homey atmosphere is a great way to stay in the city comfortably. The room was a little small, but we had full access to a common kitchen, a great "make it yourself" style breakfast, and the staff were really nice and friendly. It's located close to the subway line for easy access to anywhere in the city, and liberty village is right out the front door. Loved it.
Excellent location for air travellers as it is not necessary to go outside (a huge plus in winter, especially if travelling between climates) and is an easy walk from the terminal. Baggage carts are also available for free, though I only discovered that when returning to the airport!
Hotel very comfortable, staff very helpful. Restaurant reasonably good but overpriced - I assume one would have to travel to find alternatives. Lack of a buffet option for breakfast was particularly annoying, especially as there is clearly an area of the restaurant that is set up to accommodate this. However a la carte menu service was swift (a must for early morning departures).
My other main complaint is charging a fee for wi-fi access. I know this to be a frequent complaint from travellers and it seems to be a consistent practice in 4* hotels and up. Cheaper chains include free wi-fi, where upmarket hotels charge a fee. This kind of nickel-and-diming, when one is paying premium price is IMHO completely unjustifiable. I know I am not alone in this opinion!
We stayed on a Sunday night, arriving late and (unfortunately) leaving early. Front desk staff were both efficient and engaging. Our sense was that the hotel was not busy and that probably accounted for our room upgrade from Deluxe King room to King Executive. Our room was a very spacious corner room (14th floor) with a comfortable seating area. Street noise was minimal in the morning. To save time we had breakfast in our room - it arrived on time (we chose "knock and leave outside" rather than "set up in room"). Our invoice was slipped under the door: strangely, it omitted our breakfast order (this was corrected at the front desk).
The room had been fully renovated and the bathroom was well designed, fresh and very clean. No tub but a very ample glass-enclosed shower. The perimeter-lit mirror was a hit with my wife.
