We travel around the world alot. Stayed in many 5 star and this rates among the best! I have stayed in Peninsula in NY and Hong Kong. This might have been overall most gratifying.

“unparalleled service”

we stayed at the peninsula tokyo during the peak holiday season (dec 25-30), and despite the full capacity of the hotel, i felt that service was excellent. their concierge was extremely helpful and accommodating, and even facilitated a trip to the premium outlets in gotemba for us. the night we got back from our trip, there was even a fax waiting asking if we had a nice time and if there was anything else they could do! i was at the concierge everyday at least once a day so they had become familiar with me and were very helpful; they would also always ask how our dinner or lunch plans worked out :) location was also amazing, we were a few blocks from ginza, major shopping paradise :) everything was within walking distance, even tsukiji market. there were a lot of starbucks coffees around, as well as 7/elevens and familymart. the subway was directly beneath, with at least 3 lines -- a short walk to the ginza station would give you even more lines/choices. the yurakucho station was also nearby. lots of wonderful restaurants within walking distance. we spent a lot of time walking, checking out the stores nearby like mitsukoshi, matsuya, ito-ya, TOKYU HANDS! muji etc. i think the best part about the peninsula is that you get value for money. AND they let 3 adults stay in a room, which is perfect for me and my parents. would have paid the same for 2rooms at a mercure or a lower starred hotel, so we got a GREAT deal here at the peninsula :) can't wait to go back!!!

Area recommendations
ginza! they have everything there and it's really accessible to the different places.
Getting around
for the first few days, we were a little daunted by tokyo's subway system because everyone was saying how "difficult" it was to use their public transport. but once we got the hang of it, it was actually quite easy! make sure you know what stop you need to get off at, and pay for the necessary ticket (either 160 or 190 depending on how far). when you get to the station, read the signs to know which exit to take (they're numbered) to get to your destination. pretty simple, and if you're lost, ask the uniformed guys! :)
Dining
there is such a wealth of amazing restaurants in tokyo -- i felt like our 6 days were definitely not enough to really get to try all the fabulous places to eat. we did however try to do each kind of japanese cuisine, or at least as much as we could. we did shabu-shabu at shabusen, steak/teppanyaki at steak house hama (A MUST TRY), we did french degustation at l'atelier de joel robuchon, traditional tempura house (tempura ten-ichi), gonpachi, etc etc. i suggest you make a list of the things you want to try, research on restaurants, and make a schedule :) there's just too much to try in tokyo!!

“Tokyo's best hotel”

The hotel was very new and beautiful. The deluxe room was extremely spacious for Tokyo. The bathroom and the dressing room were better than homes. The service was also outstanding.

Shopping in Ginza and dining at the L'Osier restaurant
Dining
The French restaurant in the Shieldo building, L'Osier, is the best. They have the famous all you can eat dessert cart that would bring a smile on everyone's face.

“Best Hotel in Tokyo”

This hotel had a huge room for Japanese standards. I really liked the walk-in-closet, separate shower and tub, bedroom that was divided. Service was top-notch. Very convenient location. You had three subway lines that were connected to the hotel and walking distance to Ginza station and lots of shopping and food options. I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else.

“Best equipped Guest room ever...”

The Peninsula is perhaps not the best hotel I have ever stayed in (although it is without doubt excellent), but it certainly provides the greatest range of facilities and technology in the guest rooms that I have ever seen - every bell and whistle you could want in a room is provided, from all those which you may have come to expect in a quality hotel to some which you may not - a personal printer/fax/scanner, a quality espresso machine, "mood" lighting scenes, full spec AV kit; even down to small things - electric sockets which take UK 3 pin plugs (or any other for that matter). It is easy to spend the first hour or two just pushing buttons to find out what everything does! A daily supply of fruit and occasional small gifts add to the pleasure. Add to that impeccable service and a great spa, and the hotel has to be very highly recommended. If I have a criticism, it is perhaps the use of the lobby as a restaurant - walking in feels a bit like intruding through a busy restaurant to reach the reception desk hidden at the back rather than entering the otherwise grand lobby of a very grand hotel.

Getting around
Hibiya subway station can be accessed from the hotel basement. Don't be afraid of the Tokyo subway. Arm yourself with a decent size subway map - ask the concierge or pick one up at a station - (preferably with station names in both english and japanese so that you can identify your destination on the occasional fare chart which is not in english), and you will quickly be able to use what is without doubt the fastest means of getting around Tokyo. Buying a ticket is just a matter of identifying the correct fare on the chart above the ticket machines, dropping enough change into the machine and pressing the button corresponding to the fare. Almost all machines have an "english" button, but after you have used them a couple of times you won't need it. Fares are very cheap compared to London. On the subway each station is announced in english so you won't miss your stop. You may want to avoid rush hours, which can get intimate, but otherwise it is clear, clean, safe and efficient.

“Stunning hotel”

As we found throughout Japan, the staff at the Peninsula was accomodating, delightful and always helpful. What set the Peninsula apart was the room - chic and elegant, technologically advanced, amazingly roomy for Tokyo - possibly the most spectacular room I have ever seen...oh, and with gorgeous views to boot.

Area recommendations
Ginza was great, centrally located, close to Tokyo station, even closer to another JR station. We did also stay near Ebisu station another few nights, which I also thought was great. It felt a bit less busy and was nice to come home to after the busy, busy streets of central Tokyo.

“If all hotels in Tokyo are like this....”

Quite simply this was the best hotel we have ever stayed in, and great value for money for the quality, location and the fact that this is Tokyo! We visited Washington DC in Nov 08 and were disappointed in the Mandarin Oriental, not up to the standards we were expecting. However at the Peninsula, every single member of staff said hello or welcome back , you could use a complimentary Rolls Royce to drop you off at the train station in a morning, and the 24th Floor bar 'Peter' was absolutely stunning. Tokyo is expense (glass of wine 10 pounds), but if you are going to visit then the Peninsula is well worth the money

Traveller's tip
'Peter' at the Peninsula had a set three course menu with free-flowing wine. Based on the fact that wine was 1200 Yen a glass, and the set meal was only 7500 Yen, this was a great way to enjoy Michelin Star quality food whilst enjoying a nice few glasses of wine

“You must experience this hotel”

I will definitely return to the Peninsula. We stayed 10 days. The room was so comfortable it was a lovely retreat. Service was impeccable. Staff were gracious and remembered our names!! The bar/lounge was a favorite with the stunning view of Tokyo, even from the restroom. Easily accessible convenience stores and subway entrances made our stay more smooth.

“Exceptional Hotel”

My room at the Peninsula (a "Deluxe Room" on the 22nd floor) was without doubt the best equipped and fitted room I have ever experienced in a five star hotel - every amenity that you can think of, with superb views (but I may have been lucky with the view). The spa and pool are fabulous and the amenities faultless. The service was also exceptionally good - although to my mind it was slightly more impersonal and less friendly than for example, Four Seasons excellence. Nonetheless, don't hesitate to book this hotel - I was very impressed.
