We recently spend one night at Villa Principe Leopoldo in Lugano. Beautiful neighborhood setting with great views of the lake. Our room was in the "residences", which is across the street from the main hotel building, but that is really not an inconvenience at all. I've stayed at hotels where the room is MUCH farther away than in this situation. Rooms are spacious and very nice. Loved having our own outdoor patio. It felt much to me like a Beverly Hills or Bel Air setting.
I often come to Lugano for business and often stay at Villa Sassa because it was a great gym and spacious rooms.
- hardwood floor
- most rooms are apartment style instead of standard single-room hotel
- awesome gym with saunas
- unfriendly front desk staff (they often act like they are doing you a huge favor instead of treating you like a valued customer)
- food is so-so (better food at other hotels or restaurants)

Good hotel for few nights. It situated up on a hill, but has train. Train works till 9-10 pm. Round trip is 6 franks. Stuff is nice, restaurant is very good. Hotel has two pools and small fitness. If you do not mind to spend extra 30 franks/ night, ask for lake-view room with balkony. It worth it even if you do not spend to much time in hotel. Is not that much to do in Locarno itself, but if you have a car you can go to nearby Ascorno (5 min.)

The location was stunning, the staff superb, the free breakfast incredible, the town and shopping lovely. The staff could not do enough for us. The amenities are first class. Would rate a 10 if I could.
The hotel is heavily understaffed. Nobody has a slightest clue about five stars service. Nobody seems to know his/her role or obligations. Room service doesn't exist; same like there is no concierge or bar. Restaurant has one person to serve guests (btw, we were the only guests for breakfast and lunch).
Be careful taking the lift: one of the two to be used is ... a service lift.
No minibar. We were, according to night porter/security guy the first people this year ordering something at midnight form room service. Poor guy barely spoke Italian and English.
