“don't even think about it!”

i had my first doubts about this hotel as soon as my taxi pulled up outside, but i had made a reservation & thought i'd give it a chance. The reception staff were friendly & reception appeared ok, if a little dark & basic. I checked in, was given my key, remote control for the tv and directed to my cell - the lift was ancient & shaky & i disembarked into a dark, scary corridor reminiscent of every horror film i'd ever seen. I trundled through the corridor until i found the metal cell door with my room number painted on, opened the door, took one look at the room & just about wept!! The room was literally no bigger than a prison cell (i have worked in prisons so i know this to be true), one single bed (more of a wooden shelf with (admitedly) clean sheets), one tiny cupboard whose door looked like the rats had been at it, and another tiny cupboard containing tiny sink, tiny toilet & shower head & tray - set up was such that i might have had a shower, washed my hands & peed similtaneously, had i so desired. Back in the main 'room', one small window with (unlocking) plastic screen which looked onto a concrete space apparently used as a rubbksh dump & toilet for every animal in tenerife. As a lone female traveller i was most concerned about the fact that anyone could get into my cell through that window, as the height allowed for trouble-free access. I immediately returned to reception & said i was not taking the room & would go elsewhere - the receptionist seemed unsurprised....!
