Convenient close to Union Square and Market Street. Excellent service and hotel staff and clean comfortable rooms. Budget for $50 valet parking per day, but hotel value made up for it Will stay again my next trip to San Fran.
The Mark Twain Hotel never pretends to be other than it is. It is a hotel built long before Big Macs and Starbucks. The windows open (no air conditioning) and you get a nice breeze. Newly updated (paint, carpet, etc.) the rooms are scrupulously clean! If you want a little more space, choose one of the larger rooms. Yes, there is street noise in some of the rooms, but you are in a city, after all.
The staff was helpful and breakfast items were plentiful (I grabbed a coffee, banana, and yogurt). Food in the immediate neighborhood was good. There is a cafe next door that had a line down the street during the breakfast rush (got breakfast later, around 11:30, and it was quick, and excellent.
There is a taxi stand across the street, and transit is close. I didn't rent a car as it is expensive to house them, and you don't really need one in the city (parking in S.F. can be a challenge.)
I've stayed in many hotels around the Moscone Convention Center and this is my new favorite, especially for the price. Old hotel very nicely updated, everything solid, everything clean, staff absolutely wonderful, good coffee in the mornings in the library off the lobby, secure, huge windows in the room and bathroom, lots of storage space in the relatively small room, very comfortable bedding, great shower. Yes, it's on the edge of the Tenderloin, and you will see homeless people and maybe encounter a weirdo or two. But the hotel is only steps off the busy Market Street, so you're never far from a crowd. Plus the wonderful Farmer Brown restaurant (modern soul food) and fabulous Mikkeller Bar (42 taps and brewhouse!) are stumbling distance from the hotel door. Plenty of traffic noise from the street, but that's what you get when you stay in a small hotel in the city.
Great location, and an amazing stay! Room was very clean, and the bed was amazingly comfortable. Overall, the hotel is beautiful and we are definitely choosing to stay here if we are in San Francisco again!
I love this hotel and it is so close to all kinds of shops. It is affordable and I love the cozyness of the room. The bed is so comfortable, towels are so soft, and they lend you a robe to. I willl be going back soon.
I was impressed from the second I drove up . Only point I would make is its on the fringe of the tenderloin a bad part of town so don't make a wrong turn walking on your way home because it gets awful on those streets but cross back over to the right side of the block and your back in the nice part of town and the beautiful lobby of this hotel.
