"Friendly and great location"
The hotel is an old building overlooking the river and located on a pedestrian street along the old town square in city. The reception personnel were very friendly and advised us on what to do in the city. Despite having a view on the car park, the room was fitted very nicely and we slept very well. The pool was also a lot of fun and included a sauna and steam room which we enjoyed using!

"Great location in Richmond Square"
My initial reaction on arriving was one of disappointment however having spent the last three nights there my feelings have changed. The young couple that run the pub and their staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. They have only been in the pup for five months but have already changed the atmosphere from one catering mainly for young people to one suitable for all ages and families and this is reflected in the people you see in the bar. We didn't eat there in the evening but the quality and choice of breakfast was of a high standard and plenty of it. Whilst the room was fairly basic it was clean and of a reasonable size. They have plans to upgrade their rooms this year. To summarize, if you want a posh room pay 2 or 3 times the price and go somewhere else if not then the friendly staff, atmosphere and location makes this pub an ideal place to stay. I would use it again and recommend it to friends.

"Classic local hotel and pub near Durham"
Arrived late on a Saturday and was taken to the top room in the hotel - good size, room was clean, bathroom was a bit mildewy. Saturday (and Thursday) are steak nights - 2 steak dinners and a bottle of acceptable wine for what I have paid for wine elsewhere. A great bargain, especially as the food was great - perfectly cooked. Definitely a popular locals place, both for football in the bar and for food. Parts of the hotel date to the 1500's, it has also been a surgery and an orphanage. For those of you into ghosts, it has appearred in Britian's Most Haunted and the staff have some interesting tales to tell. Breakfast was a bit up and down depending on who was in the kitchen. We also had a massive Sunday roast meal there that was very good. Liked it enough to re-book on our way back to York.
