Our goal was to find a hotel with easy access into New York City and with a great starting point for exploring the Hudson River Valley - and the DoubleTree by Hilton Tarrytown met that goal with extra benefits. The hotel is less than a 10 minute drive to the Metro-North Tarrytown railroad station, from which the longest train ride to or from Grand Central Terminal was 45 minutes. Parking at the station is a bit limited, but we found metered street parking within a block of the station and paid an average of $7 per day (meters are not monitored after 6 PM). On one of our days at the hotel, we drove along the west bank of the river, crossing back over to Hyde Park for a tour of the Vanderbilt Mansion, then back down the east side of the valley on several scenic highways to the hotel. On another day, we took a look at several of the mansions within 10 minutes drive of the hotel as well as a visit to the amazing Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Here again, the hotel was the perfect starting point.
Extra benefits - the staff at this hotel were top notch, especially the reception staff on our check-in and in response to our many questions about the best way to get around from their location. The food at the hotel restaurant (Bistro Z) was also top notch. The menu is not extensive, but what it may lack in quantity of choices, it far makes up for in quality. Tarrytown offers a significant number of places to eat and to shop.
A great staff at counter when we arrived...no issues with check in or the facility, however the
most important defincicy was with the bed and bedding.....While getting ready to turn in
after dinner and a long drive from our home we immediately noticed a smell coming from
either the bed itself or the bedding.....A strong odor of dirty, water both from the sheets and
blankets and the pillows and pillow cases....We covered the pillows with towels and took,a
long shower in morning to kill the smell....
Just half an hour from the hustle and bustle of New York City, Tarrytown is mostly home to commuters. However, it is relevant in popular culture; most notably in literature. Washington Irving's story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” was set in Tarrytown, as were the books Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac, The Virgin Heiress, and the children’s book Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great.
