“Our favorite hotel in Siracusa”

We have stayed several times at Des Etrangers and always enjoy it. This time our room was in the new section. It was more spacious with a small view of the sea but we heard loud music at night from a local restaurant/bar. Apart from the noise we loved it. Breakfast is served on the rooftop and is both tasty and with beautiful views in the morning. Very friendly staff. Parking is not convenient but is very cheap and the hotel helps you to manage it.

“Ortygia, Des Etrangers, summer 2011”

Ortygia is an absolutely beautiful place to relax and for a short trip there is no need to go off the island. Des Etrangers was a nice hotel but not worthy of a 5* rating. The location is great though, with lots of lovely restaurants and shops nearby. The roof terrace bar had a wonderful view and the service was good. Breakfast was variable. Most days it was a struggle to get the attention of the staff to get a coffee. Also, if the hot buffet ran out they often did not replenish it - even 40 minutes before the end of the service! Coffee and pastries amazing though. The pool was a good place to relax in the middle of the day and was often empty. The reception and housekeeping staff were helpful and friendly. There is a small strip of sand just opposite the hotel (in front of the aquarium) where you can relax and swim. The nearby marina has some great boats and yachts to admire. Take plenty of spending money,!

“Les Etrangers in Ortygia, Siracusa”

We picked this hotel not knowing quite what to expect. It is perfectly situated on the water front overlooking the Well of Arethusa and the Large Harbour - and a short distance from the lovely Piazza Duomo. Hotel rooms are spread over two buldings. We had a room on the side in the second building, with partial view over the Large Harbour. (Rooms at front and side are probably best since Ortygia can be quite noisy at least on a Saturday night). The room was very large, well equipped and with a very nice large bathroom. We'ed definitely have that room again! The hotel has a dining room with panoramic views on the fifth floor. Definitely worth a visit if only for the view. We also had a superlative simple lunch there - one of our best meals in Sicily (if a little expensive it has to be said). The hotel also has spa facilties (not tried). Unusually, breakfast was not include in our room rate, so we didn't try it either.

Area recommendations
Siracusa is quite spread out so choosing your hotel location is quite important. We wanted to be on the island of Ortygia which is the oldest part of the city and full of history and drama. The lovely Piazza Duomo and other sights are here and also lots of restaurants and shops. Les Etrangers was a good choice being right on the water front. Ortygia is largely closed to traffic (but as a hotel guest you have parking privileges) and you can get about easily on foot from the hotel. (There seems to be a bike rental scheme but it didn't seem to be operational Oct 2010). The other sites (archaeological park, latomie, amphitheatre etc) are all much further away. We walked there and cabbed back.

“3 nights in Ortigia, Sicily”

We were greeted at our car by a bellboy who helped us with our bags. Check in couldn't have been easier, the front desk was expecting us. The room was nice with a large bathroom and a spa tub. I liked it so much, that I didn't want to leave after the 3 nights we had planned. Car parking is the only downside to this hotel, but it is more a problem of the area and not the hotel. We had to park about a mile away in a city car park (1 Euro overnight). I actually enjoyed it, because the walk back to the hotel is very nice.

Area recommendations
I would recommend the enire Ortigia area, I found it very nice. Also, any of the historic sites around Syracusa are a must.

“MIxed feelings”

The hotel has been extensively refurbished after apparently being closed for 30 years. First the good news. The room was large with pleasant Art Nouveau decor and French windows opening to a view across the harbour that was stunning. The public areas are attractive and well maintained. The rooftop restaurant / bar is comfortable, nicely decorated and has great views. Now the not quite so good news. Before dinner the lone barman / waiter disappeared or ignored us and another couple for extended periods and I had to go looking for him. The food in the restaurant was disappointing - rack of lamb, while nicely prepared, was ordered medium and served bloody and with nothing else - no potatoes, vegetable or salad, just the meat. Having left the room at 11am it had not been cleaned or the breakfast tray removed when we returned at 3pm - this really shouldn't happen. The drain in the basin in the bathroom didn't work properly and the water took ages to drain away, but wasn't fixed during our stay despite being reported. A room service breakfast ordered for the 8:30-9:00 slot arrived at 9:20 after repeated telephone calls to reception. The only (smallish) lift while modern was irritatingly slow. So - all in all, an attractive hotel with a great location let down by the absence of parking arrangements and a lack of attention to detail. Would I go again? Now that I know the ropes, probably. The proximity to the Piazza del Duomo and the seafront, and the views, made up for a lot.

Area recommendations
Ortigia is the old part of town on an island connected to the landward part of Siracusa by bridges. At the far end of the island the Piazza del Duomo is a great spot to hang out for lunch or drinks at any time. The 18th century Duomo itself is not that interesting, but the fact that the outer cathedral wall incorporates enormous intact pillars from a Greek temple is unique and amazing. It is a lovely place and worth a minimum stay of three days to see the sights and explore Ortigia, a little gem in the Mediterranean.
Must see
The main must-see sites in Siracusa are the Archeaological Park (Greek and Roman theatres, the ear of Dionysus cave in an ancient quarry) and the outstanding Archeological Museum, both a 10 Euro cab ride from Ortigia - ask the driver for a card with their number and when you're done they come and pick you up again in about 10 minutes and take you back to rest your weary feet with a chilled glass of wine on the Piazza del Duomo. Don't forget to give a few Euros to the unobtrusive accordion player on the steps of the cathedral for providing a musical background to the white stone and blue skies. The 18th century Duomo itself is not that interesting, but the fact that on the inside of both cathedral walls incorporate a row of enormous intact doric columns from a Greek temple is unique and quite amazing.
Dining
The many streets winding their way through the city are packed with gelaterias, bars and restaurants - if you do not like wine, seafood and ice cream this is not the place for you! In the centre of the island are larger streets and more sophisticated shopping and restaurants. Don Camillo on the Via della Maestranza deserves special mention for relief from the samey trattoria menus, exciting and inventive use of local produce, and a great local wine list. It is at a price, but is well worth every Euro. Fed up with seafood all the time? Don Camillo's sister restaurant Vite & Vitello is a few metres away across the road and is dedicated to meat, meat and meat and is much cheaper.

“BEAUTIFUL SITUATION”

comfortable and perfectly situated hotel with sea views from most rooms ; lacked atmosphere since it is a big hotel without a soul (bar closed in high season ??)A place to sleep rather than to linger as the hotel does not have any outside spaces !Interiors are well decorated in keeping with the age of the building .Syracuse is a magical city ...will rent an appartment next time ! You can get to the beach in aranela by public transport ....you will have to ask the tourist information office not the hotel ( reception does not know anything beyond the walls of the hotel )

“Best Hotel in Syracuse”

Beautiful relaxing hotel with stunning views. Fifth floor restaurant serves delicious breakfast indoors or outside, again with wonderful panorama, all included in price. The Bar is a memorable place to sip Prosecco or cocktails as the sun sets. Restaurant in evening is pricey. Room comfortable and well appointed.

Traveller's tip
Eat out at night, cheaper and very atmospheric. Real Sicilian food in places like Mariano's or La Foglia.

“Very friendly hotel with helpful service”

We stayed one week in a room with a sea view. Hotel is well located, clean and friendly. The room was very nicely furnished and comfortable. Breakfast was good with excellent coffees and was served in their rooftop restaurant - very nice view to start the day. The front desk was especially helpful to us in arranging travel and meetings. Excellent hotel.
