“Sydney”

Good hotel on a budget, free wifi was a huge plus. Location was ok 30mins walk to bridge and opera house. City Sight seeing bus for both tours only 5 min walk

“Excellent staff”

Parking is very limited at the hotel which was not apparent on the website. The room had no overhead light and limited lamplight which made reading very difficult. However, the hotel is in a convenient location and the staff were friendly and helpful.

“It's as convenient as you would want it to be.”

The hotel is in a very convenient location. It's near restaurants, the hop-on, hop-off buses, and even a shuttle that operates to the airport from around the block. It's about a half-hour walk to the Opera house, and circular quay, the places to hang around. The staff is super helpful, and would attend to my request. There is also a travel agency nearby, if you needed to add a last minute tour of any place local or international -. what more could one want.

“Excellent value”

Hotel room was very comfortable. The reception staff and concierge were unfailingly helpful and polite. Free if rather slow wireless WiFi in the hotel lobby. Local area is a centre for Sydney nightlife with many restaurants and a wide range of cuisines along Victoria Street, fast food outlets and a large national supermarket. The night life can leave its traces but the area is being developed with new high rise upmarlet apartment blocks. Convenient location if you do not mind walking or taking taxis to Circular Quay and Darling Harbour.

What to pack

An umbrella, it seems to rain whenever we visit Sydney.

Must see

A harbour trip is not to be missed and a visit to the picturesque Hunter Valley is worthwhile. The Art Gallery and Sydney Museum are particularly interesting.

Dining

Dine at Darling Harbour and Circular Quay (fish is a speciality). Victoria Street specialises in ethnic restaurants.

Events and shows

Take the opportunity to enjoy a concert at the Sydney Opera House. Book on the website well in advance.

“Gem in the Cross”

Great value, nicely furbished hotel, situation in the heart of Kings Cross. A little wary of the location prior to arrival, but no concerns once we'd arrived and it's on the doorstep to some good bars and restaurants. Several nice suburbs within walking distance provide a welcome retreat from city mahem.

Woollahra for it's boutique shops, delis and restaurants.

“Couldn't believe how nice it was”

The hotel staff there was amazing. They were so helpful. They gave me great suggestions on places to eat and things to do. They helped schedule my Blue Mountains tour and didn't make me feel like an idiot when I locked my room key in my room. Anything I needed they were more than happy to help. Including towing my bags to the taxi. I will be returning in 2012 and plan on staying here again!!!

“In the middle of Kings Cross”

This hotel is about a 1 minute walk from the Kings Cross transit station. Not a problem even if you have a large suitcase to carry. Free WiFi in the lobby for guests is nice, and the rooms are small but comfortable. I walked all over Sydney, as well as using the nearby train station. There's some noise during the day from a buildnig next door that's being renovated, and at night from folks down in the street having a good time. There's a wine bar just next door that's a nice place to spend time before going out for the evening. In the morning there are a variety of cafe's within a 5 minutes walk, where you can people watch, and eat breakfast or lunch. Neighborhood stores are around if you need to buy things, as well as ATMs for getting cash.

“Diamond Down Under”

This was by far a gem of a hotel. The rooms were beautiful, ambiant lighting and comfortable accomodations. We arrived quite a bit early for check in, and since the room was not ready, we were given directions to the local sights, like the opera house and harbor, all within walking distance. When we returned, they had upgraded our room to deluxe, quite a nice surprise. The concierge was helpful, and attentive. There were many local bistros to dine in, all open for breakfast through late night, and just a short walk from the front door. This is a centrally located boutique hotel, and well worth every penny we spent. While in Sydney, make sure you take the tour bus, hop on-hop off, very convenient and a perfect way to get around. If you have time, make sure you take one of the many excursions, we went to the Blue Mountains and rain forest. Bondi beach is one of the stops on the tour bus, so make sure you go. We can't wait to go back for a longer stay.

When to go

Late Spring is the best, from the info we found in our research, but if you are in a budget, winter (June through September) is the best value, mid 60's and mostly sunny.

Getting around

By far, the best way is one of the many city tour buses. Convenient and clean, and cheaper than the taxis.

Must see

Bondi beach, and the Circular Quay were great. Also have to spend a few hours at the Gardens.

Dining

Food is so expensive, fill up on a big breakfast and a late dinner. The take-away stands at the harbor are the most reasonable, but plan to spend most of your budget on food.

Outdoors or beach

The Blue mountains were beautiful, and the rainforest was too, but make sure you have good walking shoes, it was quite a hike and quite steep.
