"Beautiful and relaxing place to stay in Kefalonia"
Astra is simply perfect for a relaxing break in the hot Greek sun. Friendly staff, very chilled-out place, all buildings and decor in excellent conditions, the gardens are fantastic. Super pool, lots of sun beds, even in August we always got lots of pool-side time. The sea and a little beach called Ammes is literally 250 metres from Astra, so it's perfect for an afternoon dip. Restaurant is decent enough but probably the only weak link, especially as there's not that many restaurants nearby either.
The only watch-out....if you don't like aeroplanes landing/taking off, then this isn't the place for you! It's very close to the runway, but the planes only land a few times a day, and even then they're actually quite a cool spectacle.

"Good choice for holiday - Better than main centres"
We arrived at the Island around 9.25 via Ryan Air, not the most comfortable of airlines but acceptable for a 3 hour journey. Having picked up the hire car, it was quite an event to drive on the right hand side of the road in a left-hand drive car for the first time and it was hairy trying to find the hotel in the dark with a minimum of road signs but after several wrong turnings we made it. Thank goodness it was only 2 miles from the airport. Had we chosen a far more distant resort it would have been a little unnerving to undertake such a journey for the first time.
We had overall a lovely week apart from Thursday. We had decided to drive up to Fiscardo at the top of the island but the heavens opened before we arrived. When it rains on Kefalonia it is generally torrential. We spent a hair-raising 2 hours trying to make it back to the hotel on a coastal hairpin bending road with orange coloured floods and falling cliffs but we did make it. The island is beautiful but the roads on the whole are full of pot holes and very poorly signposted. Still it was an adventure. We had some wonderful meals and enjoyed it thoroughly. I would have liked more information about the filming of the book Captain Correlli's Mandolin, which alerted us originally to this island but there was little if nothing to advertise that it had taken place. That was quite a disappointment but with some research on-line we did find some of the locations where filming had taken place.
Excellent location of dining room/area overlooking the bay giving a full view of the sunset. Excellent menu covering Greek and European cuisine.
Pool bar an easy place to spend the day with great snacks and drinks available all day and evening. Plenty of loungers with umbrellas and a larger shaded area. The pool was deeper at its extreme than I expected but had a ledge all round the edge so you could always touch the bottom at the deep end.
Rooms were clean and were kept that way throughout our stay. Ours had an air-conditioner that functioned well.
Breakfast was a little strange to English tastes with a mix of cheese, ham and sweet cake.
I had a great time trying out my 'Greek' with the staff but it was better to stick to English with them.
I will certainly be going back there

Hotel was great, very clean and the staff were all very helpful and friendly. Only slight surprise was they didn't do any meals, Avithos is slightly remote but there were still several great local restaurants.
