The district is named after Sultan Ahmed I, who ordered the construction of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque. Other attractions include the Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia), Topkapi Palace, Byzantine Hippodrome, and Basilica Cistern.
